Job summary

St. Michael's Hospital, part of Unity Health Toronto, seeks an Inpatient Pharmacy Technician to support unit-dose distribution, medication dispensing, and inventory management in a busy hospital setting.

responsible for compounding aseptic preparations, narcotics handling, and ensuring accurate documentation and compliance with safety standards across the Providence Healthcare network in Toronto.

Qualifications

• Graduated from a recognized Community College.
• Registered with the Ontario College of Pharmacists as Registered Pharmacy Technician.
• A minimum 6 month working experience (including practicum training) in a pharmacy setting, hospital experience preferred.
• Good verbal and written communication skills; proficiency with Microsoft Office software.
• Familiarity with aseptic techniques; strong knowledge of basic pharmacology and proper handling techniques for pharmaceuticals.
• Familiarity with Pharmacy computer software; strong skills in pharmaceutical calculations; knowledge of pharmacy automation technology, computerized materiel management and inventory control procedures as an asset.
• Familiarity with basic medication safety principles.
• Familiarity with equipment including electronic balances, calculator, fax machine, photocopier, keyboard and computer terminal.
• Very good attendance record; Good performance record.

Responsibilities

• Dispense medication orders for hospital patients in accordance with procedures and safety requirements.
• Check medications independently as registered Pharmacy Technician.
• Operate distribution machinery safely and efficiently (Unit Dose Auto-Packager, Tablet-packager, Narcotic equipment, balances, laminar cabinet).
• Issue narcotics and controlled drugs per security standards.
• Maintain perpetual inventory and deliver to patient care units.
• Conduct daily narcotic counts and document discrepancies.
• Use aseptic technique to prepare IV antibiotics and narcotics for standard infusions.
• Provide ward stock and ensure charging/returns documentation.
• Monitor expiry dates and arrange disposal or return to supplier.
• Process expired narcotics for disposal approval.
• Pre-package medications in unit dose formats.
• Assess suppliers based on formulary/contracts.
• Determine quantities to purchase with inventory control.
• Place orders using Meditech MM PHA with proper documentation.
• Order vaccines from the Ministry of Health when needed.
