Job description

The Greater Victoria School District provides public educational services to over 20,000 students in the Greater Victoria Area, encompassing six municipalities. To support this service, the District has a current operating budget of $260 million and employs approximately 3,500 staff, including teachers, principals, vice principals, support staff, psychologists, speech and language pathologists, and exempt managerial staff.

The Greater Victoria School District (SD61) is seeking an Information Systems Network Administrator to report to the Manager of Information Technology. The Network Administrator is responsible for managing and maintaining the district's network infrastructure to support educational and administrative needs. This role involves analyzing existing systems, defining requirements, proposing technological changes, and providing technical expertise to staff.

The Network Administrator undertakes projects independently or as a project manager, involving significant business analysis, technical analysis, scripting/software development, and technical support, including system configuration, security management, and performance optimization to enhance network infrastructure. The position operates in an environment of constantly changing priorities and short timelines, supporting mission-critical systems.

Qualifications:
  • A postsecondary degree in Information Technology, Computer Networking, or a related field, with a minimum of 4 years of specific experience, or six or more years of related experience.
  • Cisco Certified Network Associate (CCNA) or Cisco Certified Network Professional (CCNP).
Experience & Knowledge:
  • Proven experience supporting and maintaining a distributed, multi-vendor enterprise network environment (Cisco and Palo Alto Networks).
  • Deep understanding of Layer 2 and Layer 3 switching and routing technologies using Cisco Catalyst platforms.
  • Hands-on experience managing and troubleshooting Next-Generation Firewalls (NGFW) at scale, including security policy design and VPN configuration.
  • Familiarity with systems like Palo Alto, Aruba, ClearPass, Fortinet Firewalls, VPN, VoIP.
  • Thorough knowledge of business, educational, and networking computer systems.
  • Working knowledge of current network systems and best practices, including configuration and management of network devices, firewalls, WAN, and LAN setups.
  • Strong understanding of DevOps principles.
  • Ability to support Internet of Things (IoT) devices and networks.
  • Knowledge of programming and scripting languages (e.g., PowerShell, Python, Bash, Ansible).
  • Experience with network automation and infrastructure-as-code tools (e.g., Ansible).
  • Knowledge of modern protocols like SDWAN and IPv6 is an asset.
  • Proxy management and familiarity with NAC solutions are assets.

This position falls within the CUPE collective agreement, offering a pay rate of $43.13 per hour, plus a comprehensive benefits package after successful probation.
