Job summary

Rambler, part of the Trotter & Morton Group, seeks a Night Shift Shop Foreman to lead shop and yard operations, ensuring safe, on-time delivery of fabrications. The role emphasizes strong supervision, coordination with QA/QC, and active participation in prioritizing work and resources.

The position requires journeyperson certification with 5–10 years in industrial fabrication, plus experience overseeing trades. Night shifts, extended hours, and a commitment to safety are essential.

Qualifications

  • Journeyperson certification or equivalent in welding/pipefitting or related trade.
  • 5–10 years experience in industrial fabrication or shop environments.
  • Foreman or supervisory experience overseeing trades and yard operations.
  • Ability to read and interpret technical drawings and shop packages.
  • Familiarity with applicable codes, standards, and safety regulations.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee day-to-day shop and yard operations to meet project schedules and quality requirements.
  • Coordinate workflow between fitting, welding, QA/QC, and yard operations for efficiency and on-time delivery.
  • Communicate production status, priorities, material requirements, and safety concerns to teams and management.
  • Allocate manpower, equipment, and resources based on project priorities.
  • Review shop drawings for accuracy and sequencing; mark up drawings as required.
  • Ensure welds receive required inspections and that non-conforming work is corrected.
  • Coordinate with QA/QC to ensure heat numbers, test records, and documentation are complete.

Roles and Responsibilities
  • Oversee day-to-day shop and yard operations including fitting, welding, material handling, and shipping/receiving to meet project schedules and quality requirements.
  • Coordinate workflow and sequencing between fitting, welding, QA/QC, and yard operations to ensure efficient production and on-time delivery.
  • Maintain effective communication with day-shift and management teams regarding production status, outstanding work, material requirements, quality issues, safety concerns, and priorities for the following shift.
  • Allocate manpower, equipment, and resources based on project priorities and delivery requirements.
  • Review shop drawings for accuracy, constructability, and sequencing; identify and address errors or omissions and mark up drawings as required.
  • Ensure fitters, welders, and yard staff have the correct drawings, materials, and consumables prior to starting work.
  • Verify layouts before cutting or fabrication and inspect fitted spools prior to welding.
  • Ensure all welds receive required visual inspections and NDE and that incomplete or rejected work is returned for correction.
  • Coordinate with QA/QC staff to ensure heat numbers, as-built dimensions, test records, and documentation are accurately completed, including hydrostatic testing when required.
  • Oversee receiving, storage, internal material handling, and shipping of materials and completed fabrications, ensuring traceability and proper protection.
  • Ensure completed materials are photographed and secured prior to shipment and special storage requirements are met per project specifications.
  • Coordinate preventative maintenance, inspections, and safe operation of shop and yard equipment, including support of critical lift planning.
  • Supervise, mentor, and support foremen, trades, operators, and helpers, addressing productivity or quality concerns through coaching and training.
  • Participate in hiring, discipline, and dismissal of shop, yard, and trade personnel as required.
  • Promote and enforce safe work practices, maintain clean and organized work areas, and foster a positive and respectful work environment.
  • Identify and implement opportunities to improve efficiency, productivity, quality, and overall workflow.
Required Skills & Abilities
  • Strong leadership and supervisory skills with the ability to manage diverse teams.
  • Solid understanding of pipe fitting, welding processes, fabrication sequencing, and material handling.
  • Ability to read, interpret, and mark up technical drawings and shop packages.
  • Strong organizational and planning skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities.
  • Working knowledge of QA/QC requirements, NDE processes, and documentation.
  • Effective communication skills with trades, QA/QC, safety, and management teams.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and a continuous improvement mindset.
  • Commitment to safety and quality excellence.
Required Experience & Education
  • Journeyperson certification or equivalent experience in welding, pipefitting, or a related trade.
  • Minimum 5–10 years of experience in industrial fabrication or shop environments.
  • Previous experience in a foreman or supervisory role overseeing trades and yard operations.
  • Experience working with pressure piping, spools, or fabricated assemblies is considered an asset.
  • Familiarity with applicable codes, standards, and safety regulations.
Additional Requirements
  • Ability to work night shift hours and extended hours as required to meet project schedules.
  • Physically capable of working in shop and yard environments.
  • Strong understanding of safe lifting, rigging practices, and equipment operation.
  • Ability to maintain accurate records and documentation.
  • Willingness to support company policies, safety programs, and operational standards.
