Job summary

The Resort Municipality of Whistler in British Columbia seeks an Industrial Electrician Utilities to maintain and repair electrical systems across water distribution, water treatment and wastewater infrastructure. You will work under the Maintenance Foreperson in a 76.5-hour bi-weekly schedule and must possess a Red Seal or BCTQ Journeyperson certification.

Requirements include Grade 12, a BC Class 5 license, and at least five years’ journeyperson experience with electrical/electronic control

Job description

Situated within the shared, unceded territory of the L̓il̓wat7úl (Líl̓wat People) and Sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish People), the Resort Municipality of Whistler (RMOW) is a vibrant destination resort community, local government organization and leader in providing municipal programs, services, progressive planning and infrastructure. The Utilities department has an opportunity for qualified individuals to apply for the position of Industrial Electrician Utilities. Reporting to the Maintenance Foreperson, this position offers 76.5 hours bi-weekly starting as soon as possible. This is skilled work at the journeyperson level involving the performance of a variety of electrical installation, maintenance, and repair tasks, primarily related to the water distribution, water treatment, wastewater collection and wastewater treatment infrastructure managed by the Utilities department and in accordance with Federal, Provincial and municipal regulations and standards. An employee of this class also installs tests and performs preventative maintenance on a variety of electronic sensors, controls, transmitters and similar components of automatic remote sensing and control systems.

Qualified candidates possess a Grade 12 diploma or equivalent, completion of technical courses related to the work, and a Red Seal or BCTQ Journeyperson Electrical Certification (mandatory), supplemented by at least 5 years of Journeyperson experience working with electrical and electronic control equipment and systems. Electrical Field Safety Representative (FSR) designation and completion of a broad range of technical courses related to the Water and Sewer industry is desirable. An equivalent combination of training and experience may be considered.

Qualified candidates demonstrate through knowledge of the standard methods, practices, materials, tools, and equipment used in this type of electrical work and considerable knowledge of the hazards, necessary safety precautions, applicable rules, and governing regulations. Also, must possess the abilities to understand and carry out oral and written instructions; to read and work from sketches, diagrams, and blueprints; to prepare and maintain related records; to make responsible and effective decisions under pressure and in response to emergencies; and to direct one or more skilled or semi-skilled helpers as required. Candidates must be physically able to perform work outdoors in all weather conditions and may be required to perform night work at times. Work may be wet, dirty, malodourous, and physically confined.

The successful candidate demonstrates excellent communication skills, strong initiative, and ability to work with minimal supervision, and commitment to promoting a diverse and inclusive workplace within their team and will create and maintain effective working relationships with others while contributing to a positive environment.

As a requirement of the position, the successful candidate must possess a valid BC Class 5 driver’s license and provide a satisfactory driver’s abstract prior to beginning work. This position works 76.5 hours bi-weekly at a rate of $49.78 per hour. This role normally works on a schedule consisting of eight days of work in a fourteen-day period. Each day of work shall be 10 hours exclusive of a one-half (1/2) hour lunch period.
