Job summary

The Town of Smithers is seeking a Utilities Supervisor (Utility Operator IV) to lead day-to-day operations and maintenance of the municipal water supply and wastewater systems. This is a full-time, 40-hour-per-week supervisory position with a strong emphasis on safety and adherence to regulatory standards.

Qualifications include five years of municipal water/wastewater experience, three years of supervisory work, a high school diploma or equivalent, and a BC driver's license with Airbrake

POSITION TITLE: Utility Operator IV (Supervisor)
HOURS OF WORK: Full-Time, 40 hours per week
HOURLY RATE: $42.34 (2025)

ABOUT SMITHERS
Surrounded by mountain ranges and beautiful lakes and rivers, Smithers is a true northern gem. The town has a population of around 5,400 and is a service hub for the surrounding region comprised of approximately 15,000 people.

Residents enjoy four seasons of recreational activities; including a ski hill within half an hour of town, world-class fishing, backcountry and cross-country skiing, hunting, golfing and alpine trails for hiking and horseback riding, along with a lively music scene, boutique shopping, an art gallery and museum, an aquatic centre, and numerous family-friendly activities.

GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES:
The Utility Supervisor is responsible for the day-to-day operations and maintenance of all Municipal water supply and distribution systems and the wastewater treatment and collection systems.

Qualifications include:

  • A high school diploma or equivalent.
  • Five years experience with municipal water supply and wastewater treatment.
  • Three years supervisory experience.
  • Valid BC drivers license with Airbrake endorsement.
  • An equivalent combination of education, training, and experience may be considered.
