Responsibilities

About the Role

Indirect Tax Manager will serve as the lead indirect tax resource for the Company's Canadian operations. This is a highly hands-on role responsible for managing the full spectrum of Canadian indirect tax matters, with a particular focus on e-commerce, marketplace, and digital commerce business models. The role will oversee indirect tax compliance, advisory, planning, audit management, tax technology initiatives, and business support activities related to GST/HST, PST, and QST. The successful candidate will work closely with external advisors and cross-functional stakeholders across Finance, Product, Legal, Operations, and Technology to ensure compliant and scalable tax operations while supporting continued business growth. We recognize that marketplace facilitator expertise is a highly specialized area. Candidates with strong indirect tax and e-commerce experience are encouraged to apply, even if they have not worked directly with all marketplace facilitator regimes.

This position is for an existing vacancy.

  • Lead and manage all Canadian indirect tax matters, including GST/HST, PST, and QST compliance, advisory, tax research, planning initiatives, audit support, and risk management activities.
  • Serve as the Company's primary indirect tax subject matter expert for Canada, providing practical guidance to business stakeholders and supporting strategic business decisions.
  • Own and oversee Canadian indirect tax compliance processes by coordinating with external service providers, reviewing tax filings and reporting deliverables, and managing communications with tax authorities.
  • Assess and advise on indirect tax implications of e-commerce, marketplace, digital commerce, fulfillment, and cross-border business activities, including marketplace facilitator requirements and related tax obligations.
  • Support new business initiatives, product launches, market expansion projects, and operational changes by identifying tax considerations, assessing risks, and providing practical implementation guidance.
  • Partner closely with Product, Engineering, Operations, Legal, and Finance teams to ensure accurate tax determination, reporting, and implementation of indirect tax requirements across business processes and systems.
  • Lead and manage indirect tax audits, government reviews, tax authority inquiries, and assessments, including coordinating responses, preparing supporting documentation, and managing external advisors.
  • Identify indirect tax risks and opportunities, strengthen internal controls, and drive process improvements, automation initiatives, and tax technology solutions to support scalable and compliant growth.
Qualifications

Minimum Qualification(s)

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Tax, Law, or a related field.
  • At least 5 years of relevant indirect tax experience for the Manager level.
  • Strong, hands-on technical knowledge of indirect tax regimes, including GST/HST, PST, and QST.
  • Direct experience navigating marketplace facilitator legislation and marketplace operator tax obligations.
  • Proficiency or experience working with indirect tax engines and ERP solutions (e.g., Avalara, Vertex, ONESOURCE, SAP, Oracle).
  • Proven ability to operate independently in a highly hands‑on role, with strong analytical, communication, and cross‑functional stakeholder management skills.

Preferred Qualification(s)

  • CPA, CPA, MTax, JD, or an equivalent recognized professional tax/legal qualification.
  • Solid working background within E-commerce, marketplace, digital commerce, Fintech, or large‑scale platform‑based business models.
  • Prior experience in a major public accounting firm, specializing within an indirect tax advisory practice.
  • Familiarity with U.S. sales tax compliance, nexus rules, and U.S. marketplace facilitator concepts.
  • Experience participating in the implementation, optimization, or scaling of tax technology platforms (e.g., Shopify Tax, Vertex, Avalara).
  • Demonstrated ability to thrive in fast‑paced, rapidly evolving technology environments and manage ambiguity effectively.
