Job summary

Huron-Superior Catholic District School Board is hiring a K-8 Indigenous Transitions Coach to provide intensive supports to Indigenous learners as they transition into and out of elementary school. The successful candidate will build strong relationships with Indigenous students, families, and childcare centres to support transitions and improve engagement and well-being.

Preference will be given to candidates who self-identify as Indigenous.

Qualifications

  • Degree or diploma in Social Sciences, Indigenous Studies/Services, First Nations Family Support/Community Worker, Child and Youth Worker or related field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Knowledge of Indigenous teachings, cultures, perspectives, and local community.
  • Awareness of Indigenous community resources and ability to connect students and families to these resources.
  • Understanding of equity, especially in areas of special education, mental health and Indigenous learning.
  • Strong organizational and communication skills; proficient with computers; able to work flexibly.
  • Experience with online platforms (e.g., Google Meet) and virtual environments for remote support.
  • Valid driver’s license and willingness to travel for board business.

Responsibilities

  • Provide intensive supports to Indigenous learners in transitioning through K-8.
  • Build positive relationships with Indigenous students and families; identify barriers and solutions to learning, engagement and well-being.
  • Collaborate with schools, parents, guardians, and communities to foster trust and communication.
  • Engage Indigenous childcare centres to support transitions and work with educators to integrate Indigenous ways of knowing.
  • Facilitate a circle of care to improve student success from kindergarten through grade 8.
