Job summary

Emily Carr University of Art + Design invites applications for a permanent, part-time Indigenous Counsellor (tenure-track, non-teaching) based in Vancouver, BC. The Counsellor reports to the Director of Counselling + Wellness Services and delivers counselling services to the student body, including intake, crisis intervention, individual and group therapy, and referrals.

Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in counselling psychology or social work.
  • Minimum five years’ experience in a counselling setting.
  • Experience with art/design and media student populations is an asset.
  • Knowledge of DSM framework.
  • Experience with DBT, experiential, somatic, sensorimotor, or emotion-focused approaches.
  • Lived Indigenous knowledge and culture.
  • Professional registration with a BC counselling regulatory body or equivalent.

Responsibilities

  • Provide a full range of personal counselling and therapy to students.
  • Assess and refer students for psychiatric and longer-term care.
  • Consult with ECU Counselling Office protocols and guidelines.
  • Develops and delivers programs for Indigenous students.
  • Offers interventions using Indigenous healing modalities or other clinical approaches.
  • Provide consultations to faculty, staff and administration to reduce emotional labour.
  • Develop partnerships with local Indigenous resources to build a network of services.
  • Participate in internal and external committees dealing with counselling and student success.
  • Supervise Master’s level students when appropriate.
  • Consult with external agencies providing student services.
  • Provide leadership to the ECU community on counselling-related matters.
  • Keep current knowledge of best practices in counselling for post-secondary contexts.
  • Performs other related duties as required.
