Job summary

Alberta Energy Regulator (AER) is seeking a Facility Engineer to provide facility, environmental and process engineering expertise for in situ oil sands projects under OSCA and EPEA. You will coordinate reviews, articulate risks, and help shape regulatory decisions within a multidisciplinary team.

The role emphasizes independent work, strong communication, and collaboration with industry and government, with flexibility for location and occasional travel.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Chemical, Petroleum, Mechanical or Environmental Engineering.
• 5–7 years of related experience in process, environmental or facility/industrial engineering within the energy sector.
• Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) or Professional Technologist (P.Tech) with APEGA or CET with ASET, or eligible to be registered.
• Strong understanding of Alberta's regulatory framework (EPEA, OSCA) and reservoir engineering basics.
• Strong written, verbal and interpersonal communication skills.
• Experience with project management concepts is preferred.

Responsibilities

• Review, coordinate and provide timely recommendations for in situ oil sands facility components.
• Draft technical recommendations and conditions to ensure regulatory compliance.
• Act as liaison with industry, AER staff and government during reviews.
• Perform desktop surveillance and occasional site travel to assess risks.
