Human Resources Specialist - Human Resources
Full-Time/Permanent

As our Human Resources Specialist, you will contribute to the Town’s mission of "Taking of Banff" by grounding employee and workplace policies, procedures and programs in a culture of integrity, inclusion, accountability and professionalism.

Reporting to the Manager, Human Resources, this is a trusted, hands-on senior role supporting employees and leaders across the organization. You will combine sound HR practice, practical knowledge of Alberta legislation, emotional intelligence and thoughtful judgement to foster a workplace where people feel supported, informed and able to do their best work.

Position Overview

The Human Resources Specialist supports the full employee experience—from recruitment and onboarding through development, performance management, employee relations and transitions.

Key areas of responsibility include:

  • Providing practical HR advice, coaching and support to employees and leaders.
  • Supporting legislative compliance, including Alberta employment standards, human rights and occupational health and safety requirements.
  • Administering and supporting compensation, benefits, disability management, attendance and workplace accommodations.
  • Leading and supporting equitable recruitment and selection processes.
  • Coordinating onboarding, employee development, performance management, recognition and succession-planning initiatives.
  • Supporting employee relations matters, including workplace concerns and investigations, with discretion and a fair, fact-based approach.
  • Reviewing and maintaining HR policies, procedures and programs to align with organizational needs and legislative requirements.
  • Building trusted relationships with employees, leaders, Council, external partners and professional advisors.
  • Contributing to a physically and psychologically safe, respectful and inclusive workplace.

This position requires a consistent in-person presence at the Town of Banff workplace. The role relies on accessible, relationship-based HR support; confidential conversations; participation in workplace meetings; and direct collaboration with employees and leaders throughout the organization.

Required Qualifications

You bring:

  • A post-secondary degree, designation or certification in Human Resources or a related human services field.
  • At least seven years’ experience as an HR generalist, with demonstrated responsibility in areas such as recruitment, compensation and benefits, disability management and accommodation, performance management, learning and development, employee and labour relations, and organizational change.
  • Experience applying employment-related legislation and regulatory requirements, including conducting workplace investigations as needed.
  • A demonstrated ability to support a positive, safe and inclusive organizational culture.
  • Sound judgement, confidentiality and discretion when representing employees, leaders and the organization.
  • Strong written, verbal and presentation skills, including the ability to communicate HR information clearly in individual, group and public-facing settings.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office - particularly Excel, Word, PowerPoint and Outlook, as well as cloud-based document management systems and HR/payroll platforms.
  • A valid Alberta Class 5 driver’s licence and a clear driver’s abstract.
  • Ability to obtain a criminal record check with vulnerable sector clearance as a condition of employment.
  • Experience working in a municipal government environment is an asset.

The Person We’re Looking For:

  • Empathic Communicator: You can be the "Switzerland" of the organization - recognizing emotion while remaining objective, calm and focused on the facts.
  • Jack of All Trades: You are an experienced HR generalist with broad exposure to employee matters, workplace practices and organizational needs. You bring perspective, curiosity and readiness for what each day may bring.
  • Decision-Maker: You exercise strong judgement and critical thinking. You see the broader context, weigh the facts and provide clear recommendations that support both employees and the organization.
  • Emotionally Intelligent: You are approachable, trusted and people-focused. You offer thoughtful feedback and help create a workplace culture founded on safety, belonging and inclusion.
  • Collaborator - Solver: You value partnership and work creatively with colleagues to identify practical solutions. You communicate approaches clearly to build shared understanding, alignment and commitment.

Work Schedule: Monday - Friday: 35 Hour Work Week

Compensation: $86,920.38 to $108,650.48 per year - based on education and work experience.

  • Benefit: Comprehensive group health benefits, competitive retirement benefits, and a variety of non-traditional benefits following your start date, not the least of which is working with a dedicated team and living in a beautiful national park setting.

Working safely is a condition of employment at the Town of Banff. As part of our internal responsibility system, all employees are accountable for adhering to Occupational Health and Safety legislation and Town of Banff safety protocols. The Town of Banff's safety culture philosophy is one of continuous improvement, so we look forward to your suggestions to make our workplace even safer.
