Position Summary :
The Indigenous Friendship Centre of Sault Ste. Marie (IFCSSM) is seeking a dedicated, culturally grounded Human Resource Generalist (HRG) to join our team. This key position supports the human resource needs of our urban Indigenous non-profit, helping to foster a safe, inclusive, and empowering work environment grounded in Indigenous knowledge systems and aligned with principles of equity, reconciliation, and respect for Indigenous rights.
The HRG plays a vital role in guiding employment practices that are informed by the Ontario Human Rights Commission’s (OHRC) recommendations on Indigenous-specific employment issues. This position supports reconciliation and systemic change through the development and implementation of policies and practices that honour both Indigenous culture and legislative compliance.
This full-time role encompasses responsibilities across the following areas : recruitment and onboarding, employee relations, performance management, training and development, policy implementation, benefits administration, health and safety, and legal compliance. The HR Generalist also acts as a trusted resource and support for all staff, contributing to a healthy, productive, and culturally respectful workplace.
Key Responsibilities :
- Provide HR services and support that reflect Indigenous values and align with organizational and human rights frameworks.
- Lead inclusive, equitable recruitment and onboarding processes that prioritize Indigenous employment and representation.
- Maintain health and safety standards and support a culture of workplace well-being.
- Manage accurate employee records in accordance with privacy laws and best practices.
- Develop and implement policies that reflect the Employment Standards Act and incorporate culturally rooted approaches to wellness, conflict resolution, and justice.
- Promote equity and inclusion by embedding anti-discrimination practices in HR strategies, aligned with OHRC guidelines.
- Facilitate culturally safe and restorative approaches to conflict resolution and employee relations.
- Offer training and development related to anti-racism, Indigenous cultural safety, and equitable employment practices.
- Work in collaboration with Elders and Knowledge Keepers to ensure HR strategies reflect Indigenous teachings and protocols.
- Support internal and external communications around HR initiatives, including employer branding, employee engagement, and workplace culture.
- Collaborate across programs to ensure consistent, inclusive, and supportive messaging and organizational practices.
- Promote and support staff access to professional development opportunities, including those offered by the Ontario Federation of Indigenous Friendship Centres (OFIFC).
- Serve as a cultural resource for staff by supporting access to traditional knowledge, ceremonies, and Elder supports.
- Integrate Indigenous knowledge systems—such as land-based practices, wholistic wellness, and community accountability—into HR strategy and daily practices.
- Ensure that all staff and leadership receive opportunities for cultural competency training and continuous learning.
- Align HR practices with Indigenous values and teachings while maintaining compliance with all relevant provincial and federal laws, as well as human rights policies.
Qualifications :
- Degree or diploma in Human Resources, Indigenous Studies, or a related field, or equivalent combination of lived / professional experience.
- 2–5 years of experience in Human Resources, ideally in an Indigenous, community-based, or non-profit environment.
- Strong knowledge of Indigenous cultures, urban Indigenous experiences, and the impact of colonialism on workplace dynamics.
- Familiarity with the Ontario Human Rights Code and OHRC guidance on reconciliation and Indigenous-specific employment.
- Exceptional interpersonal and facilitation skills, including experience with restorative practices and conflict resolution.
- Experience working with Elders, Knowledge Keepers, or Cultural Advisors in professional settings.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office and HRIS systems.
- HR certification (e.g., CHRP, CPHR, SHRM-CP) is an asset, but not required.
Assets :
- Lived experience as an Indigenous person (First Nations, Inuit, Métis, or urban Indigenous).
- Knowledge of an Indigenous language or cultural protocol.
- Experience with anti-racist and decolonial HR practices.
- Knowledge of employment equity policies, TRC Calls to Action, or MMIWG2S+ Calls for Justice as they relate to workplace policy.
- Understanding of trauma-informed approaches to wellness and mental health in the workplace.
- Familiarity with funder compliance requirements and accurate HR recordkeeping.
- Excellent communication skills (oral and written), time management, and the ability to manage multiple priorities.
- Strong problem-solving skills and ability to adapt in a dynamic workplace environment.
