Job Purpose
Under thedirection of the Human Resources Director, the HR Generalist supports theorganization in the areas of recruitment and selection, onboarding, coaching,staffing, labour relations, policy and organizational development. Thisposition leads the development, implementation, and assessment of HRinitiatives.
Duties and Responsibilities
Recruitment & Selection
- Oversees full-cycle recruitment process, including posting jobs, screening, conducting interviews and reference checks, and onboarding paperwork: contracts, benefits, and payroll.
- Updatesscreening exercises and interview questions, as needed, in collaboration withunit directors to ensure appropriate, viable, and measurable candidateevaluations.
- Organizesand attends career/job fairs to promote Saskatoon Open Door Society as anemployer of choice.
- Conductsjob analysis, including collaborating with internal staff, collecting data, andupdating job descriptions to ensure accurate and up-to‑date descriptions of allpositions across the organization
Onboarding
- Managesthe development and implementation of the onboarding process for newly hiredemployees.
- Continuallyassesses the onboarding process and incorporates new knowledge and ideas intotraining and development, policy or process improvements, as applicable.
- Conductsorientation for new employees, updating the information frequently andadjusting the delivery methods.
- Collaborateswith directors and supervisors to deliver meaningful ways to welcome newemployees to the organization and the culture.
- Liaises between supervisors and employees to ensure performance meetings are purposeful and effective.
Staffing and Administration
- Developsand maintains employment contracts, ensuring accuracy and compliance withcompany policy and collective agreements.
- Answersemployee inquiries on topics such as job postings, benefits, vacation, andinterpreting organizational policies.
- Maintainsup-to‑date employee information and files.
- Ensuresaccurate and timely entry of new employee information, changes, and otherrelevant data into the HRIS and other internal systems.
Training and Development
- Developsand coordinates pragmatic learning and development initiatives for employees.
- Assesstraining needs and develops training curricula to deliver relevant andappropriate courses.
- Ensuresprofessional development aligns with the organization’s strategic direction andphilosophy.
- Selectsteaching aids to assist with training such as the SODS handbook, multimediavisual aids, webinars, and computer tutorials, among others.
- Considersfeedback from employees regarding the effectiveness of training methods andadjust to the various demands of different work groups.
- Plansand coordinates staff administration days; combine the efforts of unit directorsand supervisors to allocate strict scheduling minutes and topics.
Labour Relations
- Assesses employee experience and engagement
- Assistswith workplace investigations: asking questions, transcribing notes fromwitnesses, and case management.
- Assistwith the facilitation of the grievance processes and steps, in accordance tothe Collective Bargaining Agreement.
- Makerecommendations on changes and updates to policies in Collective BargainingAgreement (CBA) and participates in CBA negotiations, as applicable.
Communications and Reports
- Preparesinternal and external communications such as letters, status changes, andemployment verifications
- Draftsand sends internal memorandums and notifications regarding employmentopportunities and policy updates.
- Contactsvarious unit directors for performance evaluations, training, and staffingrequests.
- Producesand submits reports on HR activity such as monthly staffing reports, annualdepartment reports, and ad hoc reports.
Policy
- Analyzespolicies, processes, practices, and additional sources of relevant informationand provides recommendations to increase alignment with organization’sstrategic direction
- Annuallyreviews and updates organizational policies and procedures, mitigatinginconsistencies and/or gaps.
Other duties as assigned.
Education and Experience
- Post-secondarytraining in Business Administration or Human Resources and two years ofrelevant work experience.
- Priorexperience in Human Resources required.
- Basicknowledge of labour law.
- Knowledgeof unionized workplace would be an asset.
Required Licenses and/or Certifications
- Criminal Occurrence Security Check – Must complete a Criminal Record and Vulnerable Sector Check in good standing and within three months prior to first day of employment.
- Proofof English proficiency by obtaining a completed Canadian education, minimum CLBlevel 8, or IELTS 6.5.
