Description : About Us :

The Professional Faculties Human Resources Office provides a full range of HR services to seven (7) professional faculties – Architecture, Information, Law, Music, Nursing, School of Continuing Studies, and Social Work.

Position Summary :

Under the general direction of the Director, the HR Consultant is responsible for providing efficient and effective delivery of a full range of Human Resources services to clients. The incumbent is responsible for contributing to the implementation of human resource initiatives, policies, and programs that support both Faculty and Central HR objectives. The incumbent is also responsible for ensuring that all decentralized HR activities support the overall strategic objectives and business goals of the University of Toronto.

The HR Consultant independently provides advice, counseling and support to clients regarding employee and labour relations issues, organizational structure, change management, JDXpert (“JDX”) job description management system, job evaluation, compensation, salary administration, recruitment and selection, performance management, attendance management, accommodation, sick leaves, workplace investigations and terminations. The HR Consultant also advises on employment-related legislation and jurisprudence.

The HR Consultant is also responsible for undertaking a variety of HR projects as assigned by the Director.

In addition, the HR Consultant serves as an important resource to more junior HR staff on interpretation and application of employment legislation, policies, and collective agreements within the University context.

Minimum Qualifications :

EDUCATION :

University degree in a relevant discipline or equivalent combination of education and experience. CHRL designation preferred.

EXPERIENCE :

Minimum five (5) years of progressively responsible and related human resources and labour relations experience. Demonstrated experience with interpreting and applying collective agreement language along with sound knowledge of human resources best practices and employment-related legislation in a large, complex, diverse organization, preferably in an environment of higher education. Demonstrated experience with unionized and non-unionized job evaluation and compensation, change management, recruitment and selection, workplace investigations, and terminations. Demonstrated experience developing strategy, providing expertise, and overall management of complex restructuring activities. Experience managing grievance processes. Experience dealing effectively with a diverse group of clients in difficult or sensitive situations and providing timely solutions-focused advice. Proven successful project management experience and experience conducting research. Experience in coaching and conflict resolution.

SKILLS / KNOWLEDGE / ABILITIES :

Strong oral and written communication, interpersonal and organizational skills.

Demonstrated excellence in presentation and facilitation skills.

Sound knowledge of human resources best practices and employment legislation.

Proven ability to exercise sound judgment, tact, diplomacy and persuasion.

Demonstrated ability to deal with sensitive issues with compassion.

Ability to maintain strict confidentiality.

Must be a strong advocate of equity, human rights and diversity issues.

Ability to work effectively both independently and collaboratively as part of a team.

Ability to prioritize workload, multi-task, manage multiple priorities as well as deal with unexpected emergencies as they arise.

Advanced knowledge of Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, PowerPoint, Excel, SharePoint)

Demonstrated competence with databases / information systems and compiling and analyzing human resources information.

Demonstrated competence with online recruitment systems (e.g., SuccessFactors).

OTHER :

Excellent ability to deal effectively with people at all levels and constituencies within the University, as well as the community-at-large.

Ability to balance and manage multiple interests, using superior consultative skills, to influence sound business decision-making.

Knowledge of University policies and procedures.

Demonstrated analytical skills.

Strong negotiation and alternative dispute resolution skills, coupled with a proven ability in using collaborative and interest-based approaches to successfully foster and maintain relationships.
