The Role and Opportunity

The Canadian Mental Health Association (CMHA) – Toronto is looking for a Housing Outreach Worker to join our Housing Services Program. This position will be part of a team of Housing Outreach Workers and Residential Workers providing community-based housing services to individuals who suffer from severe mental illness and are living independently in the community. This position will be primarily on site supporting our dedicated sites.

Salary : $54,124 – $59,147

Responsibilities

  • Assessment of housing and support needs of people referred to CMHA / Toronto Housing Services
  • Assistance and liaison with other services needed to secure housing
  • Linkage to support services as needed
  • Periodic unit inspection to ensure health and safety conditions are being kept
  • Acting as an agent on behalf of the landlord.
  • Responding to crisis calls placed by building staff
  • Maintaining ongoing partnerships with various property management organizations
  • Keeping accurate, up to date information on their case load available on a database

Skills You Bring

  • Post Secondary Degree / Diploma in Social Services or an equivalent
  • Experience providing community based direct service to adults with mental illness
  • Knowledge of the Residential Tenancy Act and supportive housing
  • Knowledge of the criminal justice system, concurrent disorders and issues affecting the homeless
  • Knowledge of the Ontario Support Disability Program and Ontario Works
  • Familiarity with homeless outreach initiatives and the shelter system
  • Understanding of recovery principles and their application to people with mental illness
  • Good written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to work effectively in a team as well as independently
  • Strong organizational skills
  • Ability to foster and maintain relationships with the corporate sector and community agencies
  • Ability to communicate in a second language is an asset
  • Excellent interpersonal and conflict resolution skills
  • Experience working with diverse communities
  • Required to have a valid Ontario Driver’s License, access to a vehicle and insurance coverage.
