Job summary

Kitasoo Xai’xais Nation in Klemtu, BC seeks a full-time Housing Director to lead housing programs, construction oversight, and tenant relations in a community-driven setting. You will partner with housing committees, architects, engineers, and funding agencies to advance sustainable housing and capacity building.

The role combines remote work with 50% on-site presence, mentors a local successor, manages budgets and funding from ISC/CMHC/BC Housing, and provides on-site housing during on-site

Qualifications

• Degree or diploma in planning, public administration, or related field.
• Proven First Nations housing management experience.
• 3-5 years of experience in housing program administration or project management.
• Valid driver’s license.

Responsibilities

• Manage daily operations of the Housing Department and align programs with community goals.
• Develop and monitor housing policies, procedures, and records.
• Oversee tenant selection, leases, rent collection, and relations.
• Coordinate inspections, maintenance, repairs, and renovations.
• Supervise staff and contractors, ensuring safety and quality.
• Prepare and manage budgets, monitor expenditures, and funding.
• Secure funding from ISC, CMHC, BC Housing and others.
• Plan new construction and major renovations with stakeholders.
• Mentor a local successor to transition into Housing Director.

We have 517 Nation members, 319 of whom live on reserve. About the Opportunity

Kitasoo Xai’xais Nation is looking for a full-time Housing Director based in Klemtu, BC, with a flexible arrangement that combines remote work and a minimum of 50% on-site presence in the community.

Reporting to leadership and working closely with housing committees, the Housing Director is responsible for the overall management of housing programs, including administration, construction, maintenance, tenant relations, and financial oversight. This role also plays a key part in mentoring a local successor and strengthening long-term housing capacity within the community.

More specifically, your responsibilities include but are not limited to:

• Managing daily operations of the Housing Department and aligning programs with community goals
• Developing, implementing, and monitoring housing policies, procedures, and records
• Overseeing tenant selection, lease agreements, rent collection, and tenant relations
• Coordinating inspections, preventive maintenance, emergency repairs, and renovation projects
• Supervising housing staff and contractors, ensuring compliance with quality and safety standards
• Preparing and managing budgets, collecting rents, and monitoring expenditures
• Securing housing-related funding from ISC, CMHC, BC Housing, banks, and other sources
• Planning and overseeing new housing construction and major renovation projects
• Engaging with architects, engineers, inspectors, and funding agencies throughout project phases
• Mentoring and supporting a local mentee to transition into the Housing Director role
• Building community knowledge through accessible housing resources and guides
• Contributing to strategic planning for revenue allocation, land use, and regional housing initiatives

AboutYou

To qualify, you will need a degree or diploma in a related field such as planning, public administration, or a similar discipline, along with proven experience in First Nations housing management. A minimum of 3-5 years of experience in housing program administration, construction oversight, or project management, preferably within an Indigenous context, will also be essential. A valid driver's license is required.

Additionally, the following skills and background will be highly valued:

• Strong knowledge of CMHC housing programs and services, particularly those relevant to Indigenous communities in BC
• Demonstrated expertise in housing finance, planning, delivery, and administration
• Experience in construction management, inspections, renovations, and contractor oversight
• Proven ability to secure funding from ISC, CMHC, BC Housing, and other agencies
• Familiarity with remote construction challenges, building systems, and health and safety requirements (e.g., BOABC/FNHA assessments)
