Job summary

Peel Region is hiring a Household Hazardous Waste Operator for the Public Works - Waste Management team at 420 Railside Drive, Brampton. The role involves coordinating receiving, categorizing, storing and shipping hazardous waste in line with MOE regulations and Peel policies.

  • Degree or diploma in Chemistry, Environmental or related field.
  • Minimum of one (1) year experience handling hazardous material.
  • Knowledge of the Occupational Health and Safety Act, Transportation of Dangerous Goods Act, WHMIS and Regulation 347 of the Environmental Protection Act.
  • Strong computer skills with proficiency in Excel.
  • Strong analytical skills and laboratory experience to test and identify chemical waste.
  • Valid class “G” license in good standing and daily access to a vehicle.

  • Maintain an accurate accounting system of waste collection activities to ensure compliance with ECAs, C of As and MOE regulations.
  • Act as Incident Commander and provide leadership during emergencies when required.
  • Mentor Summer Students and Coop program.

Household Hazardous Waste Operator

Public Works - Waste Management

Status: 1 Regular Full Time Position

Hiring Range: $62,902 to $70,765 per annum plus benefits

Work mode and Location: onsite at 420 Railside Drive, Brampton (Heartlake CRC)

Hours of work: 35 hours per week

The role:

Reporting to the Team Lead, Household Hazardous Waste, you will co-ordinate the receiving, categorizing, storing and shipping of Hazardous Waste in accordance with Regional policies and Provincial regulations.

What you will do in this role:

  • The safe handling and storage of household hazardous waste to minimize detrimental effects on people and environment.
  • Test and identify household hazardous waste.
  • Understand the chemical properties and incompatibilities of waste.
  • Educate the public by answering all questions pertaining to household hazardous waste and other waste management programs and initiatives.
  • Maintain an accurate accounting system of waste collection activitiesto ensure compliance with the Environmental Compliance Approvals (ECAs), Certificates of Approval (C of As) and ministry of Environment (MOE) regulations.
  • Assume the role of "Incident Commander" provide leadership and implement emergency procedures when required.
  • Act as a mentor with our Summer Student and Coop program.

What the role requires:

  • Successful completion of a degree/diploma in Chemistry, Environmental or related field combined with a minimum of one (1) year experience handling hazardous material.
  • An equivalent combination of education and/or experience may be considered.
  • Knowledge of the Occupational Health and Safety Act, Transportation of Dangerous Goods Act, WHMIS and Regulation 347 of the Environmental Protection Act.
  • Strong computer skills with proficiency in Excel.
  • Strong analytical skills and laboratory experience to test and identify chemical waste.

Public Notice: Waste Collection Services Transition

Effective October 1, 2027, Peel Region’s Waste Collection Services will transfer to Brampton, Caledon, and Mississauga. Each municipality will take over service delivery on that date, with no interruption expected. Peel Region will continue supporting a smooth transition for residents. Peel Region will continue to manage Community Recycling Centres (CRC) along with transfer, processing, and disposal services.
