Job summary

Kwantlen Polytechnic University (KPU) invites applications for Student Assistant roles in Horticulture. This on-site position provides hands-on experience with inventory, facility maintenance, and crop handling to support the horticulture industry.

This entry-level role is reserved for KPU students, with compensation aligned to BC minimum wage plus applicable increases based on credits, plus comprehensive total rewards where eligible.

Qualifications

• Basic working knowledge of the field lab facility and activities.
• Good written and oral communication skills.
• Basic computer operation.
• Valid class 5 driver’s licence.
• Physical fitness sufficient for moderate manual labour (lifting, climbing, disassembly of machines).

Responsibilities

• Performs record keeping functions including inventory checking, material identification, and tabulating information.
• Assists in maintenance of facilities, including buildings, grounds, and equipment.
• Helps maintain storage area.
• Performs basic crop maintenance tasks.
• Assists with disposal of crops, including contacting customers, delivery of products, and assisting customers at retail sales.

Organizational Structure

This role reports to Instructional Associate Production / Turf / Landscape.

Summary

No incumbent working with this job description will in any one shift, do all of these duties. This job description is to be used for all Student Assistants in this area, and is set up this way to ensure the incumbent gets a wide range of experience in the horticulture industry.

Salary Information

Student Assistants Are Paid As Per The Following

• Less than one year of post‑secondary (less than 30 credits) – BC Minimum Wage
• One year of post‑secondary (30‑60 credits) – BC Minimum Wage plus 8%
• With a post‑secondary diploma or degree – BC Minimum Wage plus 21%
