Qualifications

Job description

GFL Environmental is looking for Heavy Equipment Operators to join our team at the Vernon Landfill.

Key Responsibilities:
  1. Operate equipment to bale and load waste material into trailers.
  2. Perform daily inspection and maintenance checks of equipment.
  3. Grease/lubricate equipment, check and add fluids daily.
  4. Steer, guide, and operate equipment using steering wheel, shifters, levers, buttons, and pedals.
  5. Substitute for absent operators as needed.
  6. Clean trash from tracks and gear mechanisms regularly.
  7. Use two-way radios to communicate with team members regarding work activities and priorities.
  8. Comply with all applicable laws, regulations, policies, and directives.
  9. Maintain the appearance of the grounds and facility.
  10. Attend safety and branch meetings.
  11. Perform other duties as assigned by management.
Requirements:
  • High school diploma or GED preferred but not required.
  • Forklift certification completed.
  • Ability to obtain Transfer Station / Landfill Operations Certification if needed.
  • Experience operating excavator, forklift/bobcat, front-loader, baler, backhoe, track hoe, bulldozer, and compactor.
  • Safety shoes and eye protection.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Ability to follow instructions and work independently.
  • Problem-solving skills involving multiple variables.
  • Basic math skills and ability to read equipment gauges.
  • Proficiency in English (reading, speaking, understanding, writing).
  • Physical ability to lift up to 25 pounds frequently and up to 50 pounds occasionally.
  • Work outdoors in various weather conditions.
Physical and Mental Demands:
  • Ability to stand, sit, walk, reach, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, talk, hear, climb, and balance.
  • Visual requirements include close, distance, color, peripheral, depth perception, and focus adjustment.
  • Frequent lifting up to 25 pounds; occasional lifting up to 50 pounds.
Working Conditions:
  • Exposure to loud noise, humidity, weather, moving mechanical parts, vibration, chemicals, fumes, and airborne particles.
  • Work environment is mostly outdoor, inside heavy equipment covered cabs, but exposed to weather.
  • Occasional work at heights.
