The Opportunity:
Lethbridge Transit has an exciting career opportunity to work in our Maintenance Department. We are currently seeking applications for one (1) Journeyman Heavy Duty Mechanic. This position is responsible for the maintenance and repair of all Transit fleets which includes 40’ low floor buses, cutaway buses and accessible vans. This position is responsible to ensure that all maintenance assigned by the Coordinator will be conducted in a safe, efficient, and effective manner. The successful candidate will be required to work on the various bus fleets and ensure that all maintenance work performed meets legislated standards/regulations.
Starting Wage: $41.47 per hour (2025 rate) for the first 2080 hours.
Wage: $46.08 per hour (2025 rate).
Status: Permanent, full-time
Shifts: The successful candidate may be required to work shift work.
Specific duties will include:
Perform all types of maintenance and repairs on all Transit fleets, including commercial vehicle inspections.
Diagnose mechanical and electrical faults or malfunctions.
Test required equipment for proper performance and ensure that all work meets manufacturer’s specification and legislated regulations
Notify the Maintenance Coordinator of estimated work and materials required as needed.
Maintain cleanliness, work output and safe practices in work area.
Complete work orders and time logs with all required information.
Other duties as assigned.
Specific skills and qualifications:
Possession of a valid Alberta Journeyman Heavy Duty Mechanic Certificate.
A minimum of 3 to 5 years’ experience in a heavy duty/automotive shop environment, or equivalent.
Thorough understanding and experience with all applicable health and safety regulations.
Able to interpret and apply information from vehicle manuals and diagrams.
Aptitude to learn new technologies.
Demonstrated ability to work alone or within a team environment.
Strong communication skills, both verbal and written.
The ability to think logically and keep up with changes in technology.
Possession of a valid class 3Q Driver’s license and motor vehicle inspection license, or be eligible and prepared to attain these licenses. Must have a Q endorsement.
Good computer skills and experience using Microsoft Office software will be an asset. Familiarity working with a computerized maintenance management system.
Candidates having experience in air conditioning, emissions technology, computer and electrical diagnostics (multiplex wiring) as well as in depth understanding of (Cummins) diesel engines, as well as (Allison) automatic transmissions (Not mandatory) would be considered a valuable asset.
Possession of a High School Diploma.
