Waypoint Centre for Mental Health Care in Ontario is seeking a Health & Safety Consultant to lead the design, implementation, and continuous improvement of our OH&S program in a healthcare setting.

The role focuses on legal compliance, incident investigations, training, and reporting, with on-site work at 500 Church Street, Penetanguishene and occasional remote flexibility.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in a related field required.
• College Diploma in Occupational Health and Safety with experience considered.
• CRSP or in progress preferred.
• Minimum 3 years in health and safety, healthcare setting preferred.
• Knowledge of OHSA, WSI Act, Public Hospitals Act and healthcare regs.

Waypoint Centre for Mental Health Care is a 321-bed academic and teaching hospital that provides specialized mental health, addiction and geriatric care. Located on the shores of Georgian Bay, we serve some of the most complex and disadvantaged individuals in Ontario and are the sole provider of high-secure forensic mental health services in the province.

The Manager, HR Operations and Employee Health and Safety is currently seeking a full-time Health & Safety Consultant . The position plays a key role in fostering a culture of safety at Waypoint Centre. This position leads the design, implementation, and continuous improvement of the occupational health and safety (OHS) program to ensure legal compliance and enhance employee safety and well-being. The Consultant collaborates with internal departments, external agencies, and joint committees to ensure alignment with the Ontario Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHSA), Accreditation Canada standards, and evidence-based best practices in healthcare safety.

Please Note: This position is primarily on-site with some flexibility for remote work at times. Office is located at 500 Church Street, Penetanguishene.

• Develop, maintain, evaluate, and continuously improve the hospital's health and safety program to ensure legislative compliance and alignment with best practices.
• Serve as an internal consultant on health and safety matters, supporting policy development, safety planning, and implementation of safe work practices.
• Promote a culture of safety through education, training, awareness initiatives, and learning programs aligned with legislation and organizational requirements.
• Lead or support incident investigations, as appropriate, analyze injury and WSIB trends, identify hazards, and recommend corrective actions.
• Liaise with regulatory agencies and industry partners, ensuring required reporting and compliance activities are completed.
• Support the effective functioning of the Joint Health and Safety Committee and participate as an Employer advisory member.
• Monitor, analyze, and report health and safety data to inform decision-making and continuous improvement initiatives.
• Provide guidance on health and safety requirements related to equipment, substances, renovations, clinical workflows, and safe work practices.
• Perform other duties and work at alternate locations as required to support operational needs.
• Comply with all applicable legislation, hospital policies, and safety requirements.

REQUIREMENTS/QUALIFICATIONS:

• Bachelor’s degree in a related field required.
• Consideration will be given to candidates who possess a College Diploma in Occupational Health and Safety combined with professional-level occupational health and safety experience.
• Certified Registered Safety Professional (CRSP) or similarly recognized accreditation completed, or in progress preferred.
• Minimum of 3 years of health and safety experience, preferably in a healthcare setting.
• Expert knowledge of the Occupational Health and Safety Act, Workplace Safety and Insurance Act, Public Hospitals Act, and applicable healthcare regulations.
• Strong understanding of occupational health and safety principles, best practices, and risk assessment methodologies.
• Strong relationship-building skills with leaders, staff, unions, healthcare providers, and external agencies.
• Excellent verbal communication skills with the ability to interpret legislation, provide consultation, and deliver training.
• Effective written communication skills to prepare reports, correspondence, and external compliance documentation.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite and incident reporting systems for analysis, reporting, and trend monitoring.
• Demonstrated conflict resolution, facilitation, leadership, and change management skills.
• Models and promotes core ethical practice, Waypoint Values (Caring, Respect, Accountability, Innovation)
• Preference for proficiency in French/English language skills.
