Job description

Your Opportunity :

Under the supervision and direction of the RN, RPN, LPN (Licensed Healthcare Professional), the Health Care Aide (HCA) provides direct care to clients in their homes, in both the community and lodge settings.

Responsibilities :

  1. Provides personal care and assists with activities of daily living as outlined in the care plan, including personal hygiene, dressing, feeding, grooming, transferring, and mobilizing.
  2. Provides emotional support by being a good listener, supportive, friendly, sincere, and interacting positively and optimistically.
  3. Provides respite care to relieve family caregivers, including companionship, recreational activities, and supervision.
  4. Performs healthcare duties authorized in the client’s plan of care, such as dressing changes, medication assistance, catheter and ostomy care, and exercises for mobility and strength.
  5. Operates a mobile phone and performs manual handling tasks, such as lifting approximately 30 pounds, carrying, and moving objects, including stairs.
  6. Participates in learning resources and training provided to perform work safely.

Description :

As a Health Care Aide (HCA), you will work as a collaborative member of the multidisciplinary team, providing personal assistance and support services to patients (clients, residents) requiring short-term or ongoing assistance, following the patient care plan and facility policies. You will work closely with patients, families, and caregivers across home, community, or healthcare facility settings, assisting nurses with routine care to meet hygiene, nutrition, mobility, recreation, and safety needs, supporting organized activities, and observing/reporting on patients' mood, health, and wellbeing. Under the supervision of a regulated health professional, you will help maintain a safe environment for patients, staff, and visitors, and communicate effectively with patients and healthcare professionals.

Required Qualifications :

  • Completion of a Healthcare Aide Certificate within 18 months of hire and active registration on the Alberta Health Care Aide Directory. A confirmation letter of enrolment from the Directory must be provided.
  • For nursing students enrolled in an approved Alberta nursing program: at least 100 hours of practicum completed, and either in their 1st year of practical nursing or 2nd year of baccalaureate nursing/psychiatric nursing, with proof of qualification and attestation of compliance.

Additional Required Qualifications :

  • Graduate from an educational program following the Provincial Curriculum for Healthcare Aides.
  • Basic Cardiac Life Support - Healthcare Provider (BCLS-HCP) certification required.
  • Ability to work collaboratively and accept guidance as needed.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills in English.
  • Strong interpersonal skills with patients, families, visitors, and team members.
  • Excellent time management skills.

Preferred Qualifications :

  • Recent experience in Home Care or Community settings preferred.
