Job description

Reporting to the Manager of Health, Safety & Wellness, the Health and Wellness Nurse is responsible for providing clinical nursing services to students, faculty, staff, contractors and visitors in the Health, Safety & Wellness Centre ( HSWC ) on a walk-in or appointment basis.

The Health and Wellness Nurse will disseminate health services information and provide both assistance and educational resources regarding individual health needs; maintain a variety of health records; determine health education/promotion needs and develop action plans; and perform other related duties as assigned.

In collaboration with other members of the Health, Safety & Wellness team, the Health and Wellness Nurse will champion the health, safety and wellness of all students and employees.

Position Responsibilities

Health & Safety

  • Provides clinical nursing services to students, faculty, staff, contractors, and visitors within the scope of nursing practice for walk-ins and scheduled appointments.
    • Services include initial nursing assessment, treatment, referrals, follow-up, may assist with the administration of medication, wound care management, sutural removal, first aid for eyes, skin, sprains, strains, burns, etc.
  • Provides emergency response nursing care including initial nursing assessments, treatment, referrals and follow up for students, faculty, staff, contractors, and visitors.
  • Arranges for emergency transport for students, faculty, staff, contractors, and visitors, when necessary.
  • Reports incidents that have resulted in injuries or illness to the RDP Occupational Health and Safety Officer and Workers’ Compensation Board ( WCB ) for students, faculty, and staff.
  • Completes and maintains patient care documentation in accordance with licensing body standards, ensuring that all health records are managed in accordance with the Alberta Health Information Act ( HIA ).
  • Acts as the liaison with the Alberta Public Access to Defibrillation ( PAD ) Program in conjunction with Alberta Health Services to maintain and inspect the Automatic External Defibrillators (AEDs) for Red Deer Polytechnic ( RDP ). This includes AEDs located on main campus, in the Gary W. Harris Canada Games Centre, Residence, and any other facilities as required.
  • Ensures that all medical equipment is maintained and in good working condition.
  • Coordinates inventory management for medication and supplies necessary to provide medical response and services.
  • Liaises with Community Professionals to develop, establish and maintain professional working relationships that will contribute to the Health, Safety & Wellness Centre’s success in serving the needs of RDP learners.
  • Collaborates with other members of the Health, Safety & Wellness team to ensure safe work and learning environments for students, faculty, staff, contractors, and visitors.
  • Participates in a collaborative manner with other members of the Health, Safety & Wellness team to plan, organize, and implement strategies that promote the health and wellness of RDP students, faculty, and staff. This includes a focus on identification of potential risk factors and preventative strategies.
  • Provides students, faculty and staff with education, training, in-classroom resources, and general support regarding medical conditions and appropriate preventative measures. This includes, but is not limited to blood pressure monitoring, nutrition and weight management, alcohol/drugs, STI’s, stress, anxiety, relationship problems, depressions, family issues, grief, self-mutilation, suicidal ideation, self-esteem, etc.
  • Develops, promotes, and implements wellness initiatives and communication plans that promote better health outcomes, in collaboration with internal and external stakeholders.
  • The Health and Wellness Nurse is an active member of the following Institutional groups:
    • Wellness Committee
    • Counselling & Accessibility Committee
    • CARES Team
Immunization
  • Responsible for the implementation and maintenance of the RDP immunization program, ensuring that the program adheres to the “Alberta Health Services Standard for Immunization of Post-Secondary Health Care Students and Students in Other High Risk Occupational Programs.” This immunization program will serve the needs of students, faculty, and staff at RDP .
  • Liaises with Alberta Health Services ( AHS ) and reviews the immunization requirements of AHS /Public Health/Canadian Disease Control ( CDC ).
  • Maintains a comprehensive and accurate record keeping system for all health care students and faculty.
  • Ensures all students and faculty’s immunization status meets the legislated requirements for practicum placements and communicates with the Career Education and Experience Development ( CEED ) students who have not met the minimal immunization requirement prior to placement.
Required Qualifications
  • 3-5 years’ experience in Occupational Health or Community Health Nursing with a focus of preventative disease management
  • Completion of an accredited nursing education program
  • Current registration and practice permit with CRNA
  • Current Basic Cardiac Life Support – Health Care Provider ( BCLS - HCP ).
Preferred Qualifications
  • Occupational Health Nursing certificate preferred
  • Previous Disability Management experience would be an asset
  • Mental Health Nursing experience
  • Experience leading corporate well-being initiatives preferred
