Job summary

Toronto Community Housing seeks a Health and Safety Associate to support occupational health and safety management, providing guidance to divisional managers and supervisors on policy application and compliance.

You will report to the Manager of Health and Safety and help implement programs and training to ensure a healthy, safe, and compliant workplace for staff across the organization.

Qualifications

• 2+ years of experience in human resources, occupational health and safety
• Post-secondary education in Occupational Health & Safety
• Knowledge of Occupational Health and Safety Act and related regulations
• Proficient in MS Office applications
• Experience in a unionized setting is an asset
• Strong communication and analytical skills

Responsibilities

• Provide subject matter expertise on OHS policies and programs
• Monitor and support divisional compliance with OHS program requirements
• Promote staff engagement in Joint Health and Safety Committee meetings
• Coordinate monthly JHSC meetings and track action items
• Track safety metrics and maintain risk assessments
• Coordinate and facilitate safety-related training and respirator fit testing
• Act as emergency coordinator for corporate offices and training
• Develop staff communications and awareness campaigns
• Provide coverage to senior unit staff during inspections, audits, and investigations

We are searching for a dedicated and passionate individual to join our Health, Safety & Wellnessteam at Toronto Community Housing! As the Health and Safety Associate, you willuse your expertise ofhealth and safety management principles andbest practices to support organizational compliance and provide guidanceto divisional managers and supervisors concerning occupational health and safety ("OHS"). Reporting to the Manager of Health and Safety, you will work to implement and maintainhealth and safety programsand training. Your efforts willensure that staff are engaged in physically and psychologicallysafe and healthy work supportingToronto Community Housing's ambitious plan to improve the neighborhoods and lives of Toronto Community Housing tenants.

The Health & Safety Associate will be responsible for monitoring and supporting compliance with established policies and programs in a manner that aligns with TCHC's tenant focused culture. The successful candidate will work to promote staff participation and engagement in health and safety, providing due diligence to Toronto Community Housing for the protection of employees from injury and the protection of the organization from work stoppages, charges and fines.

What you’ll do

• Providesubject matter expertise to people managers, workers and union representatives on the application of established OHS policies and programs.
• Monitor, coordinate, and otherwise supportdivisional compliance with OHS program requirements in cooperation with senior unit staff.
• Support and promote staff engagement as part of Joint Health and SafetyCommittee meetings and inspections.
• Coordinate and attend monthly JHSC meetings, tracking action items and monitoring local committee membership and compliance.
• Track safety-related metrics and maintain databases and risk assessments.
• Assess divisional training needs and coordinate and facilitate safety-related training and respirator fit testing
• Act as emergency coordinator for corporate offices including lockdown and fire evacuation procedure maintenance and training.
• Develop staff communications and awareness campaigns
• Provide coverage to senior unit staff, participating in workplace inspections, audits, and investigations as assigned.

What you’ll need

• 2years ofexperience in human resources, occupational health and safety
• Post-secondary education in Occupational Health & Safety
• Demonstrated knowledge and ability to interpret relevant legislation, regulations, guidelines and standards including, but not limited to, theOccupational Health and Safety Actand Regulations,Workplace Safety and Insurance Act, Employment Standards Act, Ontario Human Rights Code,Labour Relations Act,andPersonal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act
• Technical knowledge of health and safety risks and requirements, including workplace violence, asbestos management, contractorsafety, confined spaces,manual material handling, ergonomics, respiratory protection and WHMIS
• Working knowledge of computer applications including Microsoft Outlook, Word, and Excel
• Experience working within a unionized setting and interpreting collective agreement language related to OHS matters is an asset
• Expert communication and interpersonal skills to deal with all levels of staff, managers, bargaining agent representatives and external stakeholders
• Highly-developed analytical and problem-solving skills
