Job Title: Health & Safety Advisor
Reporting to the Manager, Health & Safety, or their designate, the Health and Safety Advisor is responsible for developing policies, procedures, and initiatives to ensure effective safety management and administration of the Eskay Creek project. This role aligns with Skeena’s safety programs, industry best practices, and all relevant regulatory and legislative requirements.

Responsibilities (including but not limited to):

  1. Safety Oversight and Engagement
    • Engage daily with the Health & Safety Manager and Mine Managers (or their designate) to implement safety initiatives for the project.
    • Provide direct oversight of safety practices for both company and contractor activities.
    • Assist in identifying potential risks, evaluating exposures, and developing plans to mitigate or prevent losses.
    • Offer daily guidance on Health & Safety programs at the employee and supervisor levels to ensure a unified and effective approach.
  2. Training and Development
    • Conduct regular training sessions and assess training needs related to safe work practices and procedures.
    • Contribute to Site Training Plans by leading new employee safety orientations, emergency response training, and modular training programs for construction activities.
    • Maintain and update Job Hazard Analyses (JHAs) for all safe work practices and equipment, integrating them into daily training.
  3. Incident Investigation and Risk Management
    • Conduct thorough investigations alongside supervisors and contractor representatives to determine root causes and implement corrective actions.
    • Review all accidents and incidents within areas of responsibility to drive continuous improvement.
    • Support a proactive safety culture by establishing and encouraging leading indicator programs, such as near-miss reporting, inspections, and leadership engagement.
  4. Field Inspections and Compliance
    • Perform field inspections, audits, and reporting, ensuring corrective action logs are managed effectively.
    • Ensure compliance with regulatory inspections and minimize deficiencies by coordinating necessary actions.
    • Maintain all training logs and documentation related to permits, regulatory requirements, and safety activities.
  5. Emergency Preparedness and Safety Programs
    • Assist in maintaining the Site Preparedness and Emergency Plans & Procedures.
    • Manage, review, assess, and support the completion of JHAs with site leadership, ensuring proper communication and documentation.
    • Advise and audit line management to ensure the effective implementation of the Health & Safety Management System.
  6. Additional Responsibilities
    • Promote and sustain a strong safety culture across all levels of the organization.
    • Perform other duties as reasonably assigned.

The Ideal Candidate
Education / Qualifications:
• Certification in Health & Safety is preferred.
• Surface Mine Rescue Certification, with the ability to instruct, is an asset.
• Valid driver’s license required.
Experience / Skills
• A minimum of 3+ years of Health & Safety experience in the mining industry.
• Training in incident investigation, including root cause analysis (RCA).
• Proficiency in INX InControl or other incident management software.
• Strong understanding of open-pit mining operations.
• Skilled in Microsoft Office Suite and audio/visual presentation tools.
• Must successfully pass Fit for Duty testing.
• Detail-oriented with excessive attention to detail.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills.
• Exhibits a high degree of responsibility for confidential matters.
• Effective team player who can jump in wherever is needed.
• Strong interpersonal and reasoning skills, with proven problem-solving abilities.
• Highly self-motivated with the ability to work independently as well as with others.

Work Location & Conditions
This is a site-based camp job at Eskay Creek Mine site. This position involves working at a remote mine site on a 15 days on/13 days off rotation.

The Eskay Creek Revitalization Project is located within the Coast Mountains of Northwestern British Columbia and Tahltan Territory. Ground transportation will be provided from local communities to the Eskay Creek Site facilities. For those applicants located elsewhere in western Canada, flight transportation from major urban centers will be provided to the Terrace or Smithers airports, from which shuttles will provide transportation to the Eskay Creek Camp facilities. Travel time and expenses are subject to Skeena’s Travel Policy.

There will be exposure to extreme temperatures in all seasons including working outdoors in snow, mud, ice, and water conditions, walking to and from different locations on uneven ground, prolonged periods of standing and physically handling/lifting/moving heavy objects. All Applicants MUST be legally entitled to work in Canada. Priority hiring consideration will be given to Indigenous Nations members who reside within the territories our projects are located.

Compensation
The expected salary range for this position is CAD $85,000 - $115,000 in line with the competitive job market for such roles carried out in British Columbia. Salary ranges are guidelines and any job offer received by a candidate will be determined on a number of factors such as relevant education, training, and/or experience.
