Alberta Health Services is seeking a qualified Operating Room Head Nurse to oversee nursing staff while ensuring patient care standards and safety procedures are met. This role includes administrative duties, staff training, and maintaining compliance with healthcare standards, within a dynamic surgical environment.
Your Opportunity:
Operating Room Head Nurse who fulfills both nursing and managerial duties. This is a more administrative-oriented role. The Head Nurse directs nursing staff and serves as the primary point of communication between nurses, doctors, administration, and other professionals. Responsible for managing overall patient safety and comfort by ensuring nursing staff provide competent care, follow safety procedures, and have necessary tools and equipment. Provides perioperative patient care using the nursing process in accordance with CRNA, ORNAC, and CSA standards of practice. Demonstrates competence delivering safe, effective, efficient care in scrub, circulating, and recovery roles as part of the surgical team. Also requires the ability to work in Endoscopy and Day Surgery areas. Must meet physical demands including lifting, pulling, pushing, walking, standing, transferring, and transporting patients and equipment frequently. Job duties and responsibilities include, but not limited to: Monitor, organize, and update patient records Create and distribute weekly staffing roster Monitor staffing needs Manage nursing staff and ensure adherence to safety processes Assist in training new nurses or those needing orientation Manage floor inventory – place equipment and supply orders Work with vendors to place and fulfill orders Provide regular and intermittent reports to management, CNE, and other departments Ensure compliance with policies, procedures, and ORNAC standards Troubleshoot equipment and IT Participate in hiring nursing staff Resolve employee conflict Balance numerous demands and priorities Work with a multidisciplinary team Provide safe care throughout the patient stay in surgical areas.

As a Head Nurse, you will be responsible for the promotion of effective relationships within the interprofessional team, while both coordinating and supervising care delivery, providing clinical guidance and supporting the development of staff in a resourceful and effective manner. As Head Nurse you will also assist in the planning, development, implementation, evaluation and maintenance of progressive and comprehensive programs, policies and procedures to ensure a high standard of care for patients (clients, residents). You will play a key role in providing safe, quality patient and family centered care while reflecting the shared vision and values of AHS.

Required Qualifications:
Completion of an accredited nursing education program. Active or eligible for registration and practice permit with the College of Registered Nurses of Alberta (CRNA). Current Basic Cardiac Life Support - Health Care Provider (BCLS-HCP).
Additional Required Qualifications:
Post grad course in peri-operative nursing or equivalent experience. 5 years clinical experience in an operative room Current membership with CRNA.
Preferred Qualifications:
1-2 years of leadership or administrative experience ACLS Connect Care Training.
