Job summary

Qualifications

  • Ability to be flexible and fulfill on-call and travel requirements.
  • Valid Class 5 driver’s license with a clean driving abstract; Class 1 or 3 desirable.
  • Experience in handling and/or transporting hazardous materials or emergency response is an asset.
  • Knowledge of vacuum trucks and power wash equipment is an asset.

Job description

Summary

The HAZMAT Team Leader will lead a team of highly trained individuals who handle the company’s most dynamic projects and emergency responses. The leader will be responsible for planning, executing, and closing major projects/responses, training technicians, and fostering professional business relationships while consistently looking for ways to expand services provided. This individual will be highly motivated, coachable and willing to obtain further training while always displaying a positive attitude.

Key Accountabilities
  • Respond at a moment’s notice to HAZMAT Emergency Responses including responding to rail, road, and fixed facilities.
  • Perform chemical transloading from one means of containment to another. This may include tank cars, tank trucks, fixed facility tanks, or other small means of containment.
  • Perform chemical neutralization and decontamination as required.
  • Assist with organizing all resources required in both a response situation and in preparation for a potential response situation, including personnel, equipment, and documentation.
  • Ensure all emergency response equipment is operationally ready including preparation, equipment decontamination, and servicing of ER equipment as outlined and required.
  • Ensure all relevant information and documentation is gathered and maintained when providing emergency services.
  • Lead safety in all aspects of emergency response, including following GFL procedures, completing safety documentation, and upholding GFL’s high level of safety.
  • Participate in live training events.
  • Participate in specialized scheduled projects as required.
  • Accountable for upholding the GFL safety and service standards within the division.
  • Coordinate service on site and oversee work performed for safety and quality excellence including understanding scopes of work and leading without deviation.
  • Assist with incident investigations including corrective action development.
  • Promote and lead GFL’s safety programs by conducting safety meetings, safe work plans and job hazard assessments.
  • Engage in site visits with clients and collect appropriate information to ensure project success.
  • Lead company initiatives while always displaying a positive attitude.
  • Track daily project hours, consumables, waste disposal volumes, etc. and report accurately to Emergency Response Manager.
  • Lead major industrial plant shutdowns including planning work, leading operations, and compiling required documentation for project closure.
  • Overlap with environmental remediation services including working with excavation equipment.
  • Professionally represent GFL.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Competencies
  • Ability to be flexible and fulfill the on-call and travel requirements of this position.
  • A Valid Class 5 driver’s license with a clean driving abstract is required; Valid Class 1 or 3 driver’s license would be highly desirable.
  • Experience in handling and/or transporting hazardous materials or emergency response would be an asset.
  • Knowledge and/or experience with vacuum trucks and power wash equipment would be an asset.
  • Physically fit and able to wear chemical protective clothing and respiratory protection from time to time as required.
  • Ability to work out of town from time to time as needed.

  • Mandatory travel across the regional area, including overnight stays.
  • Travel frequency depends on emergency response and specialized project demands
  • Any prior training or experience relating to the following would be an asset: HAZMAT Technician, Tank car Specialist, Tank truck Specialist, IC S, Confined Space Entry, etc.
