Job summary

GFL Environmental in Ottawa is seeking a Field Operations team member to support waste collection, handling, and processing across solid and liquid waste streams. You will join a safety-focused environment with hands-on training and opportunities to work with vacuum trucks, tankers, and other equipment.

The role emphasizes adherence to SOPs, accurate paperwork, and providing excellent customer service while participating in weekends HHW events and general shop maintenance.

Qualifications

  • Must be clean shaven (for respirator usage).
  • Physically fit (repetitive lifting of hoses and shoveling of soil).
  • Must be comfortable working at heights (climbing up to catwalks above tanks to dip them, climbing on top of tankers and trucks to sample them).

Responsibilities

  • 1 Week of Training on the day shift, plus 3 additional courses during the first 3 months on day shift.
  • Be trained to enter Confined Spaces, such as bulk tanks, tankers, and vacuum trucks for cleaning.
  • Receive all client waste – both bulk liquids/solids and containerized.
  • Ensure waste is processed in a timely and safe manner.
  • Prepare shipments of hazardous and non-hazardous waste for transport.
  • Load and unload waste vehicles including vacuum trucks, tankers, straight trucks, and van trailers.
  • Take samples from waste vehicles and containers for lab analysis.
  • Operate plant machinery including pumps and pressure washers; and assist with general maintenance.
  • Gain a full understanding and working knowledge of the company’s standard operating procedures (SOPs), and ensure they are followed.
  • Complete paperwork properly & ensure it is submitted.
  • Complete job hazard risk assessments
  • Ensure superior customer service is provided.
  • General shop clean-up and maintenance.
  • Attend Household Hazardous Waste collection events on weekends.
  • Other tasks as required.
