Job summary

GFL Environmental Inc. is seeking a maintenance technician for a fixed industrial water treatment and waste processing facility in Toronto. You will oversee mechanical work, repairs and preventative maintenance to ensure process availability in a unionized setting.

Required are 3–5 years in a similar role, strong mechanical/electrical knowledge, and the ability to work outdoors and lift up to 50 pounds. Prior experience with PLCs and welding is valued.

Qualifications

  • 3-5 years’ work experience in a similar role.
  • Previous maintenance experience in an industrial environment is preferred.
  • Experience with industrial electrical systems and PLCs.
  • Ability to read blueprints, diagrams, schematics, drawings and manuals.
  • Experience with preventive maintenance inspections.
  • Welding experience (MIG, Acetylene, Stick, Plasma).
  • Must wear a respirator when required and lift up to 50 pounds.

Responsibilities

  • Install, repair, dismantle, align equipment incl. pumps, presses, compressors, and piping.
  • Inspect equipment to detect anomalies and malfunctions.
  • Lead and assist third party mechanical/repair services and project management.
  • Ensure repairs comply with government standards for equipment.
  • Complete safety and preventive maintenance inspections.
  • Maintain web-based preventative maintenance program and spare parts inventory.
  • Perform Field Level Hazard Assessments for non-routine work.
  • Coordinate work with management and other teams as assigned.

Job description

To assure maintenance services for a fixed industrial water treatment and waste processing facility meet expected process availability, and to provide mechanical oversight for construction activities associated with capital works projects. This is a unionized position.

Key Responsibilities
  • Be an active participant in GFL’s Environmental, Health & Safety Program.
  • Comply with Corporate and regulatory policies and procedures.
  • Install, repair, dismantle, align equipment not limited to pumps, plate and frame filter press, air compressor & dryer, air stripper for VOC removal, air scrubber, baghouse, mechanical rake drive, mixing agitators, tanks and associated piping/valves, electrical and automated systems, mobile equipment utilizing hand and power tools.
  • Inspect and analyze all equipment to detect anomalies and malfunctions.
  • Schedule, lead, and assist third party mechanical and repair services-project management.
  • Ensure that all repairs comply with government standards for specified equipment such as process pumps, plate & frame filter press, steam boiler, compressor, rake drives, agitators, forklifts, and diesel engines.
  • Assist in the completion of all required safety and preventative maintenance inspections.
  • Complete Field Level Hazard Assessments for non-routine maintenance, repairs, installations, and retrofits.
  • Maintain web-based Preventative Maintenance program.
  • Retain critical spare parts inventory.
  • Assist with other duties as assigned by management.
Knowledge, Skills & Key Competencies
  • Previous maintenance experience in an industrial environment is preferred.
  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • 3-5 years’ work experience in a similar role.
  • Previous knowledge of heavy equipment, process equipment, pumps, valves etc. is required.
  • Experience and knowledge with industrial 240/600V, 4-20 milliamp electrical systems.
  • Experience and knowledge with PLC systems.
  • Ability to read and understand blueprints, diagrams, schematics, drawings, and manuals to determine best practices and work procedures.
  • Forward thinker, ability to troubleshoot and recognize anomalies.
  • Experience completing preventative maintenance inspections and software’s.
  • Experienced in welding techniques (MIG, Acetylene, Stick, and Plasma).
  • Experienced in managing 3rd party service providers.
  • Comfortable working in a variety of outdoor weather conditions.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook).
  • Valid G license and acceptable driver abstract.
  • Must be able to wear a respirator as required.
  • Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds.
Working Conditions

This position will operate primarily on day shift (7am-3pm) in an industrial setting that operates 24 hours per day, 5 days per week. You may be required to work additional hours and/or outside of regular scheduled hours to meet customer requirements. This position will require you to work both indoors and outdoors exposed to ambient weather conditions. This is a safety sensitive position.
