Job summary

Student Works, a Canadian family business, seeks its first Controller to shape the finance function as it grows. You will work directly with the CEO and advisory board to assess investments, support expansion, and build scalable finance processes across divisions.

You'll lead the accounting team, oversee monthly statements, budgeting, cash-flow planning, and management reporting. This role offers potential to evolve into broader finance leadership as the business scales.

Qualifications

• CPA designation and progressive accounting experience with leadership.
• Experience in private/owner-managed or multi-entity businesses.
• Knowledge of ASPE, Canadian tax, payroll, and multi-province remittances; Quebec familiarity is valuable.
• Strong budgeting, forecasting, and financial modelling with business judgment.
• Hands-on, collaborative approach with accounting staff, executives, ownership and board.
• Tech-savvy with integrated accounting and CRM systems, automation and AI usage.
• Excellent communication skills in English; French is an asset.

Responsibilities

• Lead, coach, and develop the accounting team; manage day-to-day operations.
• Review monthly financial statements and journal entries; approve entries within limits; strengthen controls.
• Lead annual budgeting with CEO and department heads; maintain quarterly forecasts.
• Own cash-flow forecasting and seasonal liquidity planning; coordinate tax credits with external firm.
• Prepare monthly management reports with variance analysis and quarterly packages for the advisory board.
• Model growth/investment scenarios; analyze margins, royalties, and coach compensation for decisions.
• Manage year-end with external firm; corporate tax planning; intercompany flows.
• Oversee payroll (coaches included) and government remittances; ensure accuracy.
