Permanent Full Time

Group Underwriter

We are looking for a Group Underwriter.

The Group Insurance Underwriter is directly responsible for assessing the risk and making decisions associated with the sale of an employer group plan, amendments to that plan and the annual renewal of the plan. And, at times, provide annual financial reports to clients about their plan.

The underwriter role is suited to the inquisitive individual who enjoys continuous learning and applying their knowledge in varied scenarios. You are a keen problem solver. You like to analyze intricate data and make decisions based on your analysis.

In this role you will be exposed to the entire lifespan of a client and interact with all Group departments.

This will give you extraordinary scope in the group operation and often require you to take ownership over process and policy.

We will provide successful candidates with a potential career path to move four career levels within the department.

What You Will Do
  • Performing analysis for the purposes of quoting, negotiating, and authorizing the acceptance of risk within a specified authority level
  • Ensuring adherence to policies, procedures, and underwriting guidelines
  • Managing the pricing of assigned in-force caseload, including performing the annual renewal of rates and expenses, in-force quotes, marketings and approvals of amendments
  • The management of all aspects of financial reporting for an assigned caseload
  • Production of financial and service agreements on assigned caseload
  • Quotation of new business
  • Communicating decisions and responding to our business development representatives, the client, or the advisor’s requests in a prompt and professional manner
  • Building positive working relationships with peers and other internal business areas
  • Meet with Senior Leaders as appropriate respecting specified authority levels
  • Act as an Underwriting resource for various projects and departmental initiatives
What You Will Bring
  • You have post-secondary education or an equivalent combination of education and experience
  • You’re curious and inquisitive. You love math!
  • You get energized when you work in partnership with team members, business development offices, and many other internal business areas, and you do this with your excellent interpersonal skills.
  • Your verbal and written communication skills are both effective and efficient
  • You are a driver who has the ability to meet tight deadlines, work under pressure, and prioritize multiple tasks and shifting priorities
  • Your powerful analytical skills provide good judgement, solutions to problems and great decisions
  • You are convincing. You can be influential and can negotiate with the ability to reach mutually beneficial outcomes while maintaining positive relationships
  • You understand what it means to put the customer first. That is, put the customer at the center of what we do
  • You have a thirst for knowledge. Hence, you have a willingness to work towards a GBA or full CEBS designation under the CEBS program
  • Reliability Status Security Clearance – this can only be completed with candidates who receive an offer of employment. This is a personal security status that is required as a condition of employment before an employee can gain access to Protected B information, assets or work sites as outlined by the Government of Canada website. The cost of submitting these checks will be covered by Canada Life.

Given the size and scope of our organization, we have the flexibility for this position to be located in the following head office locations: Toronto and Winnipeg.

The base salary for this position is between $60,000 - $89,900 annually.

This represents base salary only and does not represent other variable compensation components of our total compensation ( i.e. annual bonus, commission etc). If you are selected to move forward in our recruitment process, your recruiter will be able to discuss additional details of our total rewards program with you.

Career opportunities will be open a minimum of 5 business days from the date of posting, closing dates will vary depending on the search activity. All applications received will be reviewed on a rolling basis.
