The Graphic Designer is an integral member of the Communications and Brand Strategy Team. They are a visual storyteller that engages, informs, and inspires. Reporting to the Manager, Marketing & Digital Communications, the Graphic Designer takes concepts and ideas and creates visual representation for both print and digital media that align with the UHN brand and its representative sub-brands. The individual maintains UHN brand integrity, understands branding and marketing, has extensive experience and expertise in graphic design principles, software tools, industry trends and is part of the design process from concept to final product.
Key Responsibilities
- Work on a wide range of projects and media, using various software programs to conceptualize and create visual designs that effectively communicate messages, ideas and concepts that meet UHN strategic priorities, objectives and marketing initiatives.
- Collaborate with team members to ensure that designs meet organizational brand expectations and standards, express ideas accurately, and represent UHN standards of excellence across all platforms.
- Work independently as well as cooperatively with Communications and Brand Strategy team in coordinating multiple design projects simultaneously, setting and meeting project timelines, and ensuring materials stay within budget and meet UHN quality standards.
- Update and maintain internal databases for designs, photography, and video.
- Collaborate, brainstorm and strategize with multiple teams on a wide range of materials that may include marketing and digital campaigns, program collateral, publications, newsletters, brochures, flyers, signage, presentations, interior/exterior branded décor, among other materials, to meet project requirements and provide creative solutions.
- Develop concepts with the use of design software and execute original content by determining the ideal usage of colour theory, typography, imagery, and composition that enhances readability and visual impact.
- Manage the design and uploading process of all assets to project management software, databases and CMS.
- Knowledge of print and digital design standards and specifications. Manage print files and liaising with external printers and vendors.
- Understanding of file formats and resolution requirements for different design projects.
- Manage priorities to meet multiple deadlines while maintaining close attention to detail.
- Build strong relationships with team members and other departments to foster a collaborative working environment.
- Create accessible documents that can be posted online and comply with W3C and AODA.
- Think creatively to execute fresh, new design campaigns, graphics and layouts.
- Collaborate and engage with clients, designers, photographers, printers, and vendors.
- Produce production-ready final deliverables according to specs for print and digital execution.
- Translate production projects from concept to final approval, ensuring the integrity of the creative concept maintained.
- Use effective time management and organizational skills to maintain a continuous workflow, meet multiple deadlines and manage workload according to established priorities.
- Participate constructively in team meetings, working sessions, and problem-solving tasks.
- Maintain the proper process for edits and final sign-off.
Qualifications
- Five or more years of experience in professional graphic design
- Certificate, diploma or degree in graphic design, art, or related discipline
- Proficient with Mac-based equipment and software
- Advanced experience and working knowledge of Adobe Creative Suite, including InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop, AfterEffects
- Creative and “outside the box” thinking and ability to develop memorable campaigns
- Strong aesthetic skills and a demonstration of graphic design core principles with respect to typography, layout/composition, colour, photography, and iconography
- Knowledge of AODA (accessibility)
- Excellent time management and organizational skills with the ability to handle multiple projects concurrently and operate in a fast-paced work environment
- Ability to anticipate and quickly respond to client needs and requirements
- Excellent knowledge of the digital environment – including files, formats, and best practice
- Proficient in Microsoft Office 365
- Advanced knowledge of all pre-press requirements
