Graduate Assistant – Theology

GENERAL SUMMARY

Provides general office support to the faculty and staff of the Theology department, including duties related to day-to-day operations and special projects, such as research tasks and exam proctoring. Serves as receptionist in the Theology office during working hours, managing phones and in-person visitors. Updates Theology Department social media.

  • Compensation: Stipend of $3,500 per semester
  • Hours: 15 hours per/week, during standard workday
  • Duration: Fall 2026 and Spring 2027, renewable contingent upon satisfactory performance.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Office Assistant Duties
  • Greets all visitors/employees/students who come to the Theology Department office
  • Answers all incoming calls and directs them to the appropriate individual
  • Processes the mail
  • Maintains department office files and filing
  • Maintains stock of office supplies, reordering as required
  • Manages social media for the Theology Department
  • Reports work progress on a weekly basis to supervisor
Research Assistant Duties
  • Perform research tasks for faculty projects, using Blume Library and online resources
  • Opportunity to prepare and teach classroom lessons for Theology faculty, if desired
  • Assist faculty with grading, especially tests or quizzes
  • Occasionally proctor exams or quizzes for faculty members
EDUCATION
  • Earned baccalaureate degree and enrolled as a degree-seeking master’s or doctoral student at StMU.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office (Word, Excel)
  • Strong organizational skills
  • Telephone etiquette and excellent customer service skills
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, and to take accurate messages
  • Willingness to learn how to use basic tools for academic research in the field of Theology
  • Ability to create and disseminate publicity for Theology department events and initiatives
  • Must be conscientious, prompt, and have respect for the confidential nature of the office
  • Must be responsible, take initiative, and work well with others
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Courage to ask questions and seek clarification, and take direction as necessary
  • Preferred degree program: Theology, but all graduate students at StMU are welcome
  • Interest in assisting with ongoing department projects, like Theology Overnight Intensive, La Biblia Project (https://labiblia.stmarytx.edu/), Theology Day, and faculty research initiatives
PHYSICAL DEMANDS

While performing this role, the employee will be regularly required to sit, walk, and stand; talk and hear, both in person and by telephone; use hands repetitively to operate standard office equipment; and occasionally lift up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this position include close vision, distance vision, and the ability to adjust focus.
