Job description

BA Blacktop Ltd. is currently seeking a team-oriented, self-motivated, and dedicated individual to join our Operations Team as a Grade Foreman.

JOB PURPOSE

The Grade Foreman is the first in command under the supervision of the Superintendent and oversees the execution of work on the job site.

KEY TASKS AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Site Safety

  • Maintain a high level of safety and liability awareness at all times.
  • Perform and lead daily work plans with crews.
  • Lead weekly Tailgate Safety meetings.
  • Lead Red Alert reviews of the company’s Incidents.
  • Perform detailed Monthly work site Safety Inspections.
  • Ensure all crew members wear and maintain their PPEs according to specific tasks.
  • Apply Ground Disturbance Permit procedures as required.
  • Identify and communicate Near Misses and ensure timely reporting of incidents/accidents.
  • Follow safety procedures in accordance with the company’s OH&S manual and WorkSafeBC Regulations.
  • Identify potential hazards daily or as worksite conditions change.
  • Ensure work is carried out safely, considering risks and liabilities.
  • Maintain a clean and hazard-free work site.
  • Participate actively in incident/accident investigations.
  • Ensure proper housekeeping and maintenance of vehicles and equipment.

Job Site Operation

  • Ensure work orders and all necessary information are provided before starting work.
  • Review work orders and understand scope and timelines.
  • Discuss project requirements with the Superintendent.
  • Verify project survey/layout as needed.
  • Monitor material quantities and production rates continuously.
  • Capable of constructing curb & gutter, sidewalk, CB/MH installation/adjustment, grading, excavations, retaining walls, etc.
  • Complete work on or ahead of schedule, meeting quality standards.
  • Optimize efficiency and minimize costs through oversight and review.

Coordinate / Schedule Onsite Work

  • Inform all workers of the schedule.
  • Organize and give instructions to the crew daily, including equipment, materials, and subcontractors.
  • Supervise daily and weekly operations.
  • Monitor progress and meet deadlines.

Quality of Work

  • Ensure quality standards are met.
  • Address deficiencies early and communicate with the Superintendent.
  • Report deficiencies via NCR process.

Training and Development

  • Train and develop crew members.
  • Ensure new workers complete the New Worker Program.

Equipment Management

  • Provide necessary materials/equipment for maintenance.
  • Ensure daily equipment maintenance and checks.
  • Complete detailed daily reports (DFERS, pre-trips).
  • Communicate equipment issues promptly.

Reporting and Record Keeping

  • Complete Daily Quantity Reports and Extra Work Orders.
  • Submit accurate timesheets daily.
  • Keep detailed notes of activities, issues, and instructions.

QUALIFICATIONS (EDUCATION, TRAINING, OR EXPERIENCE)

Essential Qualifications

  • Strong knowledge of utilities/construction activities and processes.
  • Understanding of specifications (MoTI, MMCD, local government).
  • Ability to read and interpret site plans/blueprints.
  • Organizational skills for field activities.
  • Measurement and calculation skills for lengths, surfaces, volumes, and quantities.
  • Experience with project layout, laser levels, and elevation calculations.
  • Knowledge of site equipment.
  • Excellent leadership and communication skills.
  • Strong client and public communication skills.
  • Desire to learn, teach, and excel.
  • Certifications: WHMIS, First Aid Level 1, Traffic Control, Confined Space, Papyrus, Intelex, Grader Operation.

Desirable Qualifications

  • Site Plan Reading Course (BCIT).
  • Survey Course (Union / BCIT).
  • Public Works Course (BCIT).
  • Construction Management Courses.
  • First Aid Level 2.
  • Confined Space, Fall Protection, Hoisting & Rigging, Heavy Duty Trailer Endorsement.
