The University of Manitoba – Faculty of Law seeks a Grad Prog Advisor & Experiential Learning Coord AA2 (AESES) to develop and oversee a comprehensive program supporting graduate students’ professional development and practicum experiences. Qualifications
MINIMUM FORMAL EDUCATION/TRAINING:
  • Undergraduate degree is required.
  • Graduate degree in a relevant discipline or JD (i.e. education, the social sciences, social work, human rights, political science or law) or in lieu of graduate training, certifications in relevant or related disciplines with significant experience in education, communications, relationship building, program development, professional development or similar preferred.
EXPERIENCE:
  • 2 years of related senior administrative experience in an educational or civil society (non-government organization) environment is required.
  • Demonstrated experience in teaching and/or experiential learning programs is preferred.
  • Demonstrated engagement with professional organizations is required.
  • Familiarity with the University environment is required.
  • An acceptable equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

Key responsibilities

Develop, implement, and manage a comprehensive program to assist students with professional development opportunities including:

  • supporting and managing the identification of advisors;
  • developing and standardizing effective and efficient communications between graduate students and advisors;
  • providing critical assistance to the Executive Director of Clinics in managing practicum placements for experiential learning in the programs;
  • managing comprehensive professional development workshops, events, conferences, tours and symposiums issues; and
  • reflect on, research and write reports regarding professional development and experiential learning and make recommendations for program development.
Information, Communication, Resource and Data Management

In consultation with the ADGP (and relevant committees, faculty and staff as required):

  • Lead, manage and/or participate in recruiting faculty advisors and maintaining current databases containing an up-to-date list of faculty advisors (thesis and practicum streams) and making such information readily available to students, as applicable;
  • Lead, manage and/or participate in researching and maintaining current databases containing information concerning student practicum placement opportunities, alumni opportunities, personal development and alumni career planning, prospective employers, career opportunities, and making such information readily available to students and alumni, as applicable;
  • Assist and collaborate with the communications team in the management of an ongoing marketing program and the development of promotional and informational materials for distribution through the website and print media to students, alumni, prospective employers, partners and other stakeholders;
  • Collaborate and contribute to development of forms and processes for effective and efficient communication with students, advisors and stakeholders including committees, alumni, and government and community organizations;
  • Develop administrative synergies between the graduate programs and the ITL programs
Practicum Coordination and Program Development

In consultation with the ADGP and Executive Director of Clinics (EDC):

  • Provide administrative support for experiential learning including the practicum stream, including:
    • Working with the EDC, and reporting to the EDC,in securing and arranging experiential placements for practicum stream students, communicating regularly with potential practicum sites in Manitoba, Canada and internationally;
    • initiating and coordinating regular progression meetings with students as well as site supervisors;
    • Working with the EDC, liaising with practicum sites on matters such as non-academic student performance issues, general practicum procedures, and future practicum arrangements;
    • Working with the EDC, addressing non-academic problems that arise during practicum placements;
    • ensuring all relevant practicum paperwork is tracked, completed and submitted for approval as necessary;
    • Working with the EDC, conduct research, collaborate and contribute to development and design of information sessions, processes, forms and materials for effective orientation, implementation, communications and non-academic reporting within the practicum stream;
  • As directed by the EDC, reflect and report annually on the practicum experience including conducting research and making recommendations for modifications to the practicum process and the practicum experience etc.;
  • As directed by the ADGP and EDC, research and write reports with respect to graduate education, human rights and social justice education, opportunities and initiatives locally, nationally and internationally for program development purposes as well as marking;
Professional Development, Experiential Learning and Program Development

In consultation with the ADGP:

  • Research and identify potential faculty advisors (thesis or major research or practica papers);
  • Support graduate students in identifying and obtaining a suitable faculty advisors;
  • Plan, coordinate and manage the Annual Symposia, including the annual platform where MHR students showcase their work and engage with the academic and human rights community;
  • Plan, coordinate and lead graduate program activities and initiatives including tours, museum visits, workshops, seminars, public speaking engagements and other events related to professional development and experiential learning;
  • Be a resource for any graduate student-led research symposium or other student-led research dissemination initiatives;
  • Research and develop professional partnerships to support local, national and international out-of-classroom learning, internships/externships, work experience initiatives and new types of practicum placements and opportunities, in collaboration with relevant committees, faculty offices, centres and other programs and coordinate with the ADGP and EDC as needed.
  • Research, investigate and report on other professional development and experiential activities to support and/or advance the development of the overall graduate program, including identifying, developing and supporting partnerships with university and other community stakeholders;
Relationship Management, Alumni and Career Development plus Program Development

In consultation with the ADGP:

Research, develop, implement, monitor, and assess specific components of a relationship management program for all prospective students and alumni as well as in relation to community partners and other stakeholders for the purposes of:

  • developing practicum and other professional opportunities and programming to prepare graduates for careers;
  • providing ongoing professional development and career assistance for students;
  • strengthening alumni relations generally;
  • developing and strengthening community connections to the graduate program;
  • increasing the visibility and impact of the graduate program; and
  • making recommendations for program development.

The position may also assist in researching and developing programs or events in the context of pre-admission recruitment initiatives to identify and/or inform different communities of opportunities at the graduate level.

The position will conduct research related to program development, marketing, and compiling data for reporting purposes.

  • Develop, implement and maintain a communication strategy for ongoing contact and outreach with prospective students, and act as a point of contact for prospective students seeking information beyond admission procedures and financial aid, such as information related to potential career opportunities;
  • Collaborate with the University Alumni and Donor Relations Department to develop and maintain an accurate and complete alumni database comprised of contact, biographical and career information of alumni, collected via public sources and via surveys, projects, correspondence, website, etc.;
  • Establish and build relationships with a wide range of alumni, locally, regionally, nationally, and internationally through the development, implementation and maintenance of an ongoing communication and outreach strategy for alumni via direct contact, and digital communication platforms;
  • Maintain good working relations with community partners;
  • Develop working relationships with alumni;
  • Develop and foster relationships with local, national, and international organizations, NGOs, and government;
  • Collaborate with the University Alumni and Donor Relations Department in the planning and direction of various events to strengthen ties with graduate program alumni; and
  • Assist in planning and collaborating with organizations in developing programs, seminars, speaking engagements and other events involving students, alumni, professional interests, and the community at large.
