Job summary

Parks Canada is seeking a Geomatics professional to maintain spatial and non-spatial databases for the Management Unit, and to provide geomatics services supporting park management and conservation efforts.

The role requires leading or participating in projects related to applied science, monitoring, and active management within the Resource Management Program. A degree in Geomatics or related fields is expected, with experience in Esri GIS and database management.

Qualifications

• Degree in Geomatics, Geography, Cartography, or related field.
• Experience with acquisition, management, quality control, processing and dissemination of geospatial data.
• Strong knowledge of Esri ArcGIS suite and spatial databases.
• Proficiency in Python and R for data analysis.

Duties
Maintain the spatial and non-spatial databases of the Management Unit. The Parks Canada team working at the National Park Reserve of the Archipelago Mingan includes 20 employees nearly 80 people in the summer. The fieldwork, exclusively on islands, requires travel which is provided by Parks Canada boat operators. Departures are from the marina of Havre-Saint-Pierre or Mingan.

Intent of the process

Specified term position: 6 months, with possibility of extension.

Conditions of employment

• Obtain and maintain Reliability Status security clearance.
• Maintain a valid Class 5 driver's licence.
• Successfully complete a pre-employment medical examination in accordance with the policy for isolated positions.
• Be able to travel independently to various work locations (Havre-Saint-Pierre and Longue-Pointe-de-Mingan areas).

Education

• A degree from a recognized university or college with specialization in Geomatics, Geography, or Cartography.
• or
• A degree from a recognized university or college with specialization in Environmental and/or Natural Sciences (e.g., Biology, Ecology, Forestry, Geology) or another discipline relevant to the position.

Experience

1. Experience in the acquisition, management, quality control, processing, analysis, and dissemination of scientific and geospatial data from a variety of sources, including GPS/GNSS, aerial and satellite imagery, LiDAR, field surveys, and databases.
2. Experience using:
   • The Esri suite, including ArcGIS Pro, ArcGIS Online, ArcGIS Enterprise (Portal for ArcGIS), Survey123, Field Maps, Experience Builder, and Dashboards.
   • Spatial database management systems such as SQL Server, PostgreSQL/PostGIS, Oracle Spatial, and GeoPackage.
   • SQL and automation and analysis tools such as Python and R.

Applied / assessed at a later date

Knowledge

• Knowledge of current geomatics trends, methods (data compilation, processing, analysis, and dissemination), systems, standards, and tools as applied to ecology or ecosystem management using a variety of software and applications.
• Knowledge of scientific testing methods, procedures, and data/sample collection techniques.

Abilities

• Ability to acquire, store, process, and disseminate scientific and geospatial data.
• Ability to respond to a wide variety of geomatics requests and manage competing priorities.
