Job summary

McElhanney Ltd. offers an internship program starting in May 2027 at our Cranbrook branch, where you will support field and office work on surveying projects and gain hands‑on experience across Canada with mentors and peers.

You’ll work with multidisciplinary teams, learn to operate drones, 3D laser scanners, and reality capture tools, and participate in our safety‑driven, inclusive culture that aims to launch long‑term careers in geomatics.

Qualifications

  • Enrolled in a Diploma or Degree program in Geomatics.
  • Willing to travel and work out of town.
  • Able to lift heavy equipment and work on busy sites.
  • Valid Class 5 Drivers License.
  • Excellent attention to detail and clear communication.

Responsibilities

  • Assist with GNSS, RTK, RTN, and total station measurements.
  • Prepare files, maps, and survey data for project delivery with Project Managers.
  • Research plans, titles, documents, and related geospatial information.
  • Maintain and report the condition of equipment and vehicles.
  • Work in office and field across the East Kootenay region and surrounding sites.
  • Learn and operate drones, 3D laser scanning and reality capture tools.
  • Follow safety practices to Think Safe, Work Safe, and Get Home Safe.

The Opportunity

Join McElhanney's internship program starting in May 2027, where you'll discover the direction you want to take your career by gaining hands-on experience in both field and office settings. We are hiring for our Cranbrook branch, where you'll support field and office work across surveying projects. Our interns work with multidisciplinary teams to apply what they've learned in school and assist with project delivery in Surveying and Geomatics. From field operations to office-based data processing, you'll develop the skills and training necessary to solve real-world problems.

What You'll Do


  • Assist in the use of GNSS receivers for RTK, RTN, static measurements, and total stations.

  • Collaborate with Project Managers to prepare files, maps, and survey data for project delivery.

  • Research plans, titles, documents, and related geospatial information.

  • Maintain, clean, monitor, and report the condition of equipment and vehicles.

  • Work in both office and field environments across the East Kootenay region and surrounding project sites, gaining exposure to a variety of surveying and geomatics projects.

  • Learn about and operate emerging technologies, including drones, 3D laser scanning, reality capture tools, and other advanced geomatics equipment.

  • Participate in McElhanney's industry-leading safety practices to meet and exceed client needs, ensuring that our teams \"Think Safe, Work Safe, and Get Home Safe\".



Practice Areas You'll Focus On

As part of your experience, you'll gain exposure to surveying, geomatics technology, and potentially ground disturbance-related work, depending on project needs. You'll build practical knowledge and technical skills while working on real-world projects with support from experienced team members.



What You'll Bring


  • Enrolled in a Diploma or Degree program in Geomatics.

  • Ability to work in a variety of outdoor settings including wilderness/backcountry environments for extended periods with varied hours.

  • A willingness and ability to travel and work out of town.

  • Able to work in on busy sites with varied terrain and ability to lift heavy equipment.

  • Previous work experience working in outdoor environments is an asset.

  • Excellent attention to detail, good judgement and clear communication skills.

  • Modern technical aptitude and an interest in advanced reality capture, GIS, geospatial, or survey technologies is an asset.

  • Valid Class 5 Drivers License.



What Can We Offer You?

The salary range for this position is $22 - $28 per hour. McElhanney offers fair compensation that is commensurate with the individual's education, experience, skills, and professional qualifications. The posted base salary/wage range is representative of the required level of qualifications and experience for the position as noted in the job posting. The salary offered will be based on the experience and qualifications of the successful candidate.
