Job summary

The City of Burlington is seeking a General Service Person (GSP) in Transit Maintenance to help keep the fleet clean, fueled and ready for dispatch. The role supports a comprehensive bus cleaning program and may require interior and exterior cleaning of various transit vehicles.

Responsibilities include driving, fueling, sweeping, vacuuming, and assisting with bus change-offs. The position is physically demanding and requires flexibility for day, afternoon, night, and weekend shifts.

Qualifications

• Grade 12 education required.
• Ontario GZ licence with ability to upgrade to CZ.
• mechanically inclined with tools and equipment.
• Acceptable driver’s abstract (≤3 violations or ≤3 demerit points in 3 years).
• Shift work including day, afternoon, night and weekends.

Responsibilities

• Drive, fuel, sweep, collect litter, vacuum, check fluid levels and tires.
• Remove/dump fare boxes and perform interior cleaning of Transit vehicles.
• Assist with bus change-off and maintain cleanliness of buses, cars and trucks/vans.
• Work as part of the Transit Maintenance team to ensure fleet readiness.

Work location is subject to change at the discretion of the City due to operational demands.Position OverviewReporting to the Manager, Transit Maintenance the General Service Person (GSP) will be part of a Team that is responsible for ensuring the fleet is cleaned, fueled and ready for dispatch. The GSP’s will contribute to the extensive bus cleaning program and support Operation with bus change-off as required.ResponsibilitiesMust be able to perform, driving, fueling, sweeping, litter/trash pickup, vacuuming, checking fluid levels (oil, coolant, windshield washer, diesel exhaust fluid etc.), check tires, removing / dumping fare boxes that may weigh up to 30 lbs; detailed interior cleaning on all Transit vehicles (buses, cars and trucks/vans).Will be required to use a variety of cleaning and detergent products to perform interior and exterior cleaning all Transit Vehicles.Perform vehicle change off as require by OperationsWill be required to meet reasonable time expectancy in performing assigned dutiesRequirementsThe successful candidate must possess a Grade 12 education and a valid Ontario GZ licence with the ability to upgrade to a CZ class licence and be mechanically inclined in the use of tools and equipment such as: power washer, vacuum, automatic bus wash, fuel and other fluid dispensers, etc. An acceptable driver’s abstract is required (no more than three (3) driving related convictions or an accumulation of no more than three (3) demerit points in the previous three (3) years prior to the date of hire, and/or no administrative driver license (ADLS) suspensions.Each candidate should seriously consider the work environment and the nature of the work being performed. The environment is conducive to cleaning and maintaining buses. The work itself is physically demanding, repetitive in nature with continuous monitoring of production levels and quality standards.
