Job summary

Northern College is seeking a General Maintenance Worker for a full-time leave replacement position (Appendix D) in Timmins, Ontario. Reporting to the Manager, Facilities and Maintenance, you will ensure repairs and services are completed promptly to ensure safety for staff and students.

The role requires carpentry, plumbing and welding skills, a valid G license, WHMIS and First Aid/CPR/AED, with a focus on teamwork and independent work.

Qualifications

  • One (1) year certificate in a related field.
  • Minimum two (2) years of experience in large building maintenance and related trades.
  • Valid class G driver's license and WHMIS/First Aid training are required.

Responsibilities

  • Perform general grounds keeping duties such as snow removal and lawn mowing.
  • Operate plant equipment including tractors and small vehicles.
  • Perform routine maintenance on HVAC equipment, refrigeration equipment and small appliances.
  • Perform minor plumbing maintenance and building repairs (floor/ceiling/drywall).
  • Move materials and assist with inspections and maintenance tasks.

Reporting to the Manager, Facilities and Maintenance the General Maintenance Worker will ensure that repairs/maintenance, and services are completed in a timely manner to ensure safety of staff and students.

What you will be doing:

  • Perform general grounds keeping duties such as snow removal and lawn mowing;
  • Operate all types of plant equipment, including tractors, walk behind equipment, and vehicles;
  • Maintain/repair damaged or deteriorated interior and exterior building finishes through demand work orders or planned preventative maintenance such as floor and ceiling repairs, drywall repairs, and minor window and door repairs, including caulking;
  • Perform minor plumbing maintenance;
  • Perform routine maintenance on HVAC equipment, refrigeration equipment and small appliances;
  • Pick up and deliver materials and supplies and move equipment and furniture; and
  • Perform monthly inspections of fire extinguishers, stand pipe system, fire hydrants, emergency telephones, first aid kits and eye wash stations.

What you will need to be considered:

  • One (1) year certificate in a relevant/related field;
  • Minimum two (2) years of experience in large building maintenance, mobile equipment, small engine repairs, air compressor and hydraulics, with the ability to operate grounds equipment (e.g. riding lawnmower, tractor, snowblower) and small hand tools;
  • Valid class G driver’s license; and
  • WHMIS and First Aid/CPR/AED.

The successful candidate will be able to work as part of a team and independently, and must have carpentry, plumbing and welding skills, as well as troubleshooting skills.
