Job summary

GFL Environmental Inc. is seeking Helpers and Laborers to support curbside waste and recycling collection and assist with daily yard operations in Fort Frances.

You will work with Residential Drivers to load materials and help maintain clean yards while aiding with equipment upkeep. This role requires physical ability for heavy outdoor labor in all weather, a commitment to safety, reliability, and strong teamwork with yard staff and drivers.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent preferred.
• Experience in manual labor, warehouse, landscaping, or waste management is an asset.
• Ability to perform heavy manual labor outdoors in all weather.
• Strong attendance and flexibility for early starts and overtime.
• Good communication to work with drivers and yard crew.

Responsibilities

• Curbside Collection: Assist Residential Drivers along routes with manual loading of waste, recycling, and organics.
• System Operations: Operate hydraulic and compaction systems safely to prevent damage.
• Vehicle & Driver Support: Act as a spotter for reversing, tight turns, and navigation.
• Yard & Facility Housekeeping: Clean yards, remove debris, and sort materials.
• Equipment & Fleet Prep: Wash vehicles, clean cabs, and stage trucks/bins.
• Reporting & Maintenance: Report mechanical issues and hazards to management.
• Regulatory Compliance: Follow traffic laws, bylaws, safety policies, and PPE standards.
• Team Collaboration: Work with Drivers, Helpers, and Supervisors to keep operations smooth.
• Additional Duties: Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements:

• Physical Capability: Ability to perform heavy manual labor outdoors in all weather conditions (lifting, pushing, pulling, and continuous walking).

• Safety Commitment: Ability to successfully satisfy all company standards for safety-sensitive operational roles.

• Reliability: Strong attendance record and flexibility to support early morning start schedules and operational overtime when needed.

• Teamwork: Strong communication skills and ability to work effectively alongside drivers, supervisors, and yard crew.

• Experience: High school diploma or equivalent preferred; previous experience in manual labor, warehouse, landscaping, or waste management is an asset.

Responsibilities:

• Curbside Collection: Assist Residential Drivers along assigned routes with manual loading of waste, recycling, and organic materials.

• System Operations: Skillfully operate hydraulic and compaction systems using proper techniques to prevent equipment damage.

• Vehicle & Driver Support: Act as a spotter to guide drivers during vehicle reversing, tight turns, and navigating congested route areas.

• Yard & Facility Housekeeping: Perform general yard cleanup, debris removal, sorting materials, and maintaining clean work zones.

• Equipment & Fleet Prep: Assist with daily vehicle washing, cab cleaning, and staging trucks or bins within the yard layout.

• Reporting & Maintenance: Promptly report any mechanical write-ups, route hazards, yard hazards, or safety incidents to management.

• Regulatory Compliance: Adhere strictly to all traffic laws, municipal bylaws, company safety policies, and required Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) standards.

• Team Collaboration: Work closely with Drivers, Helpers, and Terminal Supervisors to support smooth, efficient daily operations.

• Additional Duties: Perform other operational and facility duties as assigned by leadership.
