Job summary

The Chandos Construction team in Alberta is seeking a General Foreman to assist the Superintendent in leading field operations, overseeing budgets, schedules and subcontractor coordination on commercial projects.

You will supervise site staff, interpret blueprints, enforce safety practices, manage daily logs and progress reporting, and help maximize profitability while adapting to changing workflows.

Qualifications

  • Must be able to read blueprints, schematics, and construction plans.
  • Strong leadership and communication skills.
  • Proven ability to manage time and priorities on complex projects.
  • Knowledge of local, provincial and federal building codes and safety regulations.
  • Willingness to travel to site and out of town as required.

Responsibilities

  • Assist the Superintendent in providing leadership for project activities and tasks.
  • Assist the Superintendent in preparing and reviewing site documentation (logs, safety records, timesheets, invoices).
  • Assist in planning, organizing and managing site manpower and materials.
  • Monitor productivity and implement improvements to maximize gains and minimize losses.
  • Manage subcontractor relationships to maintain timelines and scope of work.

Job Description

The General Foreman aids the Superintendent in managing all field and site-specific construction activities, including budget, schedule, performance, subtrades, and profitability of commercial construction projects. This person must be able to communicate effectively with the Superintendent, Project Manager and other field staff. The General Foreman is responsible for helping to provide direction and lead Chandos staff in the field.

  • Assist the Superintendent in providing leadership and direction for all project activities and tasks, ensuring project outcomes are delivered successfully and in compliance with all contracts and client needs
  • Assist the Superintendent to identify and generate requests for information
  • Assist the Superintendent in planning, organizing and managing all site construction manpower and materials, including site layout and setup
  • Assist the Superintendent with completion of required documentation, including: superintendent’s daily log, safety documentation, timesheets, invoices, labour quantities, packing slips, purchase orders, and site photos
  • Assist the Superintendent to monitor productivities throughout the project life cycle for potential opportunities and losses. Make corrections to maximize gains and mitigate against losses
  • Manage subcontractor relationships within assigned projects to maintain timelines and scope of work, and meet contact obligations
  • Maximize landfill waste diversion on all projects, and manage construction sites in a sustainable fashion, continuously minimizing Chandos’ impact on the environment
Qualifications

Minimum requirements:

  • Journeyman trade certification with Red Seal and/or Technical diploma
  • Gold Seal is considered an asset
  • Leadership training and safety certificates are recommended.
  • Five or more years of commercial construction experience.
  • Good time-management skills.
  • Able to read and interpret blueprints, schematics, field drawings, and plans.
  • An understanding of all construction trades and techniques.
  • Knowledge of local, provincial and federal workplace regulations, ordinances, legislation and building codes.
  • Travel to site and off-site locations is required.
  • May be required to work out of town.
  • Will be working both indoors and outdoors.
  • Will be exposed to potential hazards and conditions of the construction site.
  • As this is a supervisory role, hours of work, and days of work may vary from week to week based upon the business needs
Nice to Have
  • Experience with a large general contractor
  • Concrete and formwork experience
  • Valid driver’s licence and clean abstract
  • Travel required, able and willing to work out of town (occasionally inter-provincial)
  • Certifications such as Fall Protection, Elevating Work Platforms, or other site‑related tickets
