Conversations happen through apps. Algorithms decide what gets our attention. And somehow, actually being able to walk up to another person and make a case for something you believe in has become a pretty valuable skill.
That's basically this job.
Public Outreach is hiring outgoing, resilient people to join our face-to-face fundraising teams across the Greater Toronto Area.
You’ll represent organizations working on important issues like healthcare, mental health, children’s wellbeing, humanitarian support, human rights, environmental protection, and stronger communities.
Your job is to talk to real people about real issues - and inspire them to take action by becoming monthly donors.
If you’re good with people, willing to learn, and can hear "no" without letting it ruin your day, we can teach you the rest.
This is not a desk job, and it's definitely not a job where you spend the day hiding behind email.
You’ll spend your shifts face-to-face with members of the public:
Some conversations will be great.
Some people will walk right past you.
Some will say no.
That's part of the job.
The people who tend to succeed here aren't necessarily the loudest or most naturally confident. They're the people who can take feedback, recover quickly, keep learning, and come back to the next conversation with good energy.
Our GTA teams fundraise in different environments depending on current campaigns, hiring needs, and where our teams are needed most.
You could fundraise:
The nonprofit campaign you represent may change too.
You could start your time with Public Outreach representing one organization and later move onto another campaign as our partnerships and staffing needs change.
Flexibility is part of the job, and we want you to know that before you apply.
Technology is changing a lot of jobs.
This one still depends on something pretty simple: whether you can connect with another person.
You’ll build skills in:
These are useful skills whether you stay in fundraising, move into the nonprofit sector, pursue sales or communications, work in advocacy, or eventually lead a team of your own.
And no, we don't expect you to arrive with all of them already figured out.
We’ll coach you.
You might be a great fit if you:
People come to us from hospitality, retail, customer service, performance, teaching, sales, advocacy, community work, volunteering, and plenty of completely unrelated backgrounds.
Sometimes the person who hasn't done this before becomes very good at it.
We think work is better when you can actually be yourself.
Our team includes members of the LGBTQ+ community, and creating a workplace where people feel safe, respected, supported, and welcome is genuinely important to us.
We want people with different personalities, identities, backgrounds, and experiences on our teams.
You don't need to fit some imaginary "fundraiser personality."
You do need to be willing to talk to people, work toward goals, support your teammates, take feedback, and keep growing.
Our GTA teams are looking for candidates who can maintain a consistent schedule of at least 32 hours per week, with full-time availability strongly preferred.
You’ll need to be able to commit to:
You’ll have fundraising goals, and your performance will be coached and evaluated.
But your hourly wage isn’t dependent on whether every conversation ends in a donation.
Our teams work at different locations across the GTA.
Carpools are sometimes available when it makes sense, but they are not guaranteed.
You must be able to reliably get yourself to your assigned fundraising location for each shift, whether that’s by personal vehicle, public transit, or another dependable transportation option.
This role will probably suit you if the idea of talking to dozens of new people sounds more interesting than terrifying.
You should also be comfortable with:
You must also be:
Public Outreach partners with nonprofit organizations to help them build sustainable, long-term support.
Our fundraisers have thousands of conversations with members of the public about issues that matter - and turn those conversations into ongoing support for nonprofit organizations.
We’re proud to be an equal opportunity employer and a queer-friendly workplace. We welcome applicants from all backgrounds and are committed to creating an environment where people are treated with dignity and respect.
Accommodations are available upon request throughout the hiring process.
If you’re looking for active, social work where your personality, resilience, communication skills, and ability to connect with people actually matter, we’d love to meet you.
