Job summary

Algonquin College in Ottawa is seeking a full-time academic to teach and lead Veterinary Technician and Veterinary Assistant programs on-site at the Woodroffe Campus. Salary ranges from $77,153 to $133,752, depending on education and experience, with a 44-hour work week and start in December 2026.

The role covers course design, curriculum revision, and academic leadership, including student mentoring and collaboration with faculty and industry partners.

Qualifications

  • Registered Veterinary Technician designation is required.
  • Minimum of 5 years teaching experience in a postsecondary setting.
  • Minimum of 5 years as a Registered Veterinary Technician, including clinical and surgical experience.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of student success strategies in a postsecondary setting.
  • Experience with educational technologies; hybrid/online curriculum development is a plus.
  • Strong communication, presentation, and organizational skills.
  • Ability to adapt to change.
  • Commitment to the success of all learners.

Responsibilities

  • Design and update courses with program administrators, course administrators, and other faculty members.
  • Teach Summer, Fall, or Winter terms for the Veterinary Technician and Veterinary Assistant programs.

  • Create effective learning environments using educational technologies.
  • Evaluate student progress and overall outcomes within assigned courses.

Job Description:

Salary range is $77,153 to $133,752, established in terms of relevant educational qualifications and experience.


The design/revision/updating of courses, including:


  • consulting with program and course administrators and other faculty members, advisory committees and a variety of potential employers and students;

  • defining learning outcomes and evaluating and validating these outcomes;

  • specifying and approving learning approaches, necessary resources, etc;

  • incorporating educational technologies to meet the learning needs of 21st Century students;

  • reviewing and revising curriculum and participating in professional development activities during non-teaching periods.


The teaching of assigned courses, including:


  • delivery of regularly scheduled instruction in the Summer, Fall, or Winter terms in both the Veterinary Technician and Veterinary Assistant programs;

  • ensuring student awareness of course learning outcomes and evaluation techniques;

  • providing tutoring and academic advising for students both in and out of class;

  • providing a learning environment which makes effective use of available resources including educational technologies;

  • evaluating student progress/achievement and assuming responsibility for the overall assessment of the student’s work within assigned courses;

  • the development and creation of a learning environment that is conducive to success for all students.


The provision of academic leadership, including:


  • providing guidance to students, to instructors, and to part-time professors relative to the professor’s teaching assignments;

  • participating in the work of curriculum and other consultative committees, and departmental/ faculty meetings;

  • liaising with community members, engaging in program, Department, School, and College promotion;

  • remaining current in the field of study and maintaining awareness of emerging trends and practices related to teaching and learning in higher education;

Required Qualifications:


  • Registered Veterinary Technician Designation required;

  • Minimum of 5years of teaching experience in a postsecondary setting;

  • Minimum of 5 years of experience as a Registered Veterinary Technician, including clinical and surgical experience;

  • Demonstrated knowledge of student success strategies in a postsecondary setting;

  • Demonstrated knowledge and experience in the use of educational technologies; experience in the development and delivery of hybrid and online curriculum would be considered an asset;

  • Highly effective communication, presentation, and organizational skills;

  • Demonstrated flexibility and ability to adapt to change;
