Job summary

CPKC in Calgary, Alberta, seeks a Software Developer to design, develop, and support enterprise applications across the North American network. You will build RESTful APIs, backend services, and cloud-native solutions while collaborating with cross-functional teams.

You will participate in the full SDLC, drive modernization, and contribute to CI/CD pipelines with tools like GitHub, Azure DevOps, TeamCity, SonarQube, and Checkmarx. Strong OOP and SQL skills are expected.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science, software engineering, information technology, or equivalent experience.
  • Experience building and consuming REST APIs and integrating with internal/external systems.
  • React experience is a plus and helpful for front-end work.
  • Proficiency with CI/CD tools such as GitHub, Azure DevOps, or TeamCity.
  • Strong object-oriented design, patterns, and clean coding practices.
  • Experience with SQL and relational databases and security best practices.
  • Ability to troubleshoot across code, DB, integration, and deployment layers.
  • Excellent communication with technical and business stakeholders.
  • Experience working in Agile/Scrum environments.

Responsibilities

  • Design, develop, test, implement, and support enterprise applications and services using .NET, C#, ASP.NET Core, Web API.
  • Build, integrate, and maintain RESTful APIs, backend services and databases with security and performance in mind.
  • Collaborate with architects, owners, analysts, and stakeholders to gather requirements and deliver solutions.
  • Modernize applications; migrate legacy systems to cloud-native, API-driven platforms.
  • Participate in full SDLC: design, integration, troubleshooting, deployment, and production support.
  • Contribute to CI/CD practices; maintain documentation and leverage GitHub, Azure DevOps, TeamCity, SonarQube, and Checkmarx.

PURPOSE OF THE POSITION:

The Developer plays a key role in advancing CPKC's digital transformation by designing, developing, and supporting innovative enterprise applications that enhance business performance, connectivity, and operational efficiency across the North American network. This position collaborates with cross-functional teams to deliver secure, scalable, and modern technology solutions, drive application modernization initiatives, and leverage cloud, API, and DevOps technologies to enable reliable, high-performing systems that support CPKC's commitment to safety, service, and continuous improvement.

POSITION ACCOUNTABILITIES:
  • Design, develop, test, implement, and support enterprise applications and services using .NET, C#, ASP.NET Core, Web API, and related technologies to deliver reliable and scalable business solutions
  • Build, integrate, and maintain RESTful APIs, backend services, and database solutions while ensuring application security, performance, and adherence to established development standards and best practices
  • Collaborate with architects, product owners, business analysts, and stakeholders to gather requirements, develop technical designs, and deliver innovative solutions that align with business objectives and operational needs
  • Support application modernization and digital transformation initiatives by enhancing existing platforms and migrating legacy systems to modern cloud-native, API-driven, and enterprise technology solutions
  • Participate in the full software development lifecycle, including solution design, system integration, troubleshooting, performance optimization, testing, deployment, and production support to ensure operational excellence
  • Contribute to DevOps and continuous improvement practices by supporting Continuous Delivery or Continuous Deployment (CI/CD) pipelines, maintaining technical documentation, and leveraging tools such as GitHub, Azure DevOps, TeamCity, SonarQube, and Checkmarx to improve delivery quality and efficiency.
POSITION REQUIREMENTS:
  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science, Software Engineering, Information Technology, or a related field, or a combination of education and demonstrated experience equivalent to a university degree
  • Experience developing and consuming REST APIs and integrating with internal and external systems
  • Experience with React is preferred
  • Experience with source control and Continuous Delivery or Continuous Deployment (CI/CD) tools such as GitHub, Git, TeamCity, Azure DevOps, or similar
  • Strong understanding of object-oriented programming, design patterns, and clean coding practices
  • Experience with relational databases and Structured Query Language (SQL) development
  • Familiarity with authentication, authorization, secure coding, and application security best practices
  • Ability to troubleshoot application issues across code, database, integration, and deployment layers.
  • Strong communication skills and ability to work with both technical and business stakeholders.
  • Experience working in Agile/Scrum delivery environments

Management Conductor Program
