Job summary

Loblaw Companies Limited’s Franchise Academy offers a 13-month leadership development track to become a Franchise Owner within Your Independent Grocer and Loblaws City Market banners. The program emphasizes hands-on experience, cross-store exposure, and mentorship with seasoned owners, preparing you for franchise ownership across Ontario and potential relocation as needed.

Travel up to 70% within Ontario and possibly other regions in Canada; a personal investment of $50,000 is required after

Qualifications

• Minimum of 5 years of leadership experience in grocery/retail; Store Manager or Assistant Store Manager preferred.
• Proven ability to inspire, coach, develop, and lead high-performing teams.
• Strong understanding of store operations, merchandising, and financial performance including P&L, budgeting, shrink, and labour management.
• Strong relationship-building and communication skills with the ability to engage teams.
• Strong business acumen and entrepreneurial drive.
• Commitment to community engagement and values-driven leadership.
• Experience leading teams in unionized and non-unionized environments is preferred.

Responsibilities

• Lead and support special projects, including new store openings, renovations, and banner-wide initiatives.
• Build experience across high-performing grocery franchise locations.
• Develop a deep understanding of the franchise ownership model.
• Strengthen financial acumen and operational expertise.

The Franchise Academy is an intensive, hands‑on development experience designed to prepare experienced retail leaders to become successful Franchise Owners within Your Independent Grocer and Loblaws City Market, two of Loblaw Companies Limited’s leading grocery banners.

Through the Academy, you’ll gain broad, practical experience, deepen your operational knowledge, and strengthen the leadership capabilities needed to lead your own store. Who We’re Looking For:

• Minimum of 5 years of leadership experience in the grocery and/or retail sector; Store Manager or Assistant Store Manager experience is strongly preferred
• Proven ability to inspire, coach, develop, and lead high‑performing teams
• Strong understanding of store operations, merchandising, and financial performance, including P&L, budgeting, shrink, and labour management

Program Requirements:

• Frequent Travel: Travel throughout the Ontario region is a significant part of the Academy experience and may be required up to 70% of the time.
• Reliable Transportation: You must hold a valid driver’s licence and have access to a reliable vehicle for regular travel. Mileage will be reimbursed in accordance with company policy.
• Relocation: Franchise opportunities are based on business needs and store availability. Candidates should be prepared to relocate within Ontario, or in some cases to another region within Canada, upon successful completion of the Academy to pursue a franchise opportunity.

Program Length: 13 months

Please note: Becoming a Franchise Owner following successful completion of the Franchise Academy requires a personal investment of $50,000 in readily available funds.
