Job summary

University Health Network is seeking a Flow Cytometry Operator to join our specialized core facility. You will perform high-speed cell sorting and support maintenance of multiple analytical cytometers as well as train researchers in cytometry techniques.

This role requires a Bachelor’s in biomedical sciences (Master’s preferred) and at least three years of hands-on flow cytometry experience, including use of Diva/FlowJo.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in biomedical sciences or equivalent.
• 3+ years of flow cytometry experience with Diva/FlowJo.
• Experience operating a FACSAria or other cell sorter preferred.
• Excellent communication and problem-solving skills.

Responsibilities

• Perform high-speed cell sorting on behalf of biomedical researchers using instruments such as the BD FACSAria Fusion, BD FACSymphony S6, and Sony MA900 in a Containment Level 2 laboratory.
• Support operation and maintenance of analytical flow cytometers, including LSRFortessa, FACSymphony A3, and FACSymphony A5 SE.
• Perform routine instrument quality control and maintenance, including daily calibration, fluidics and electronics checks.
• Train graduate students, postdocs, research technologists, and other facility users in operation of analytical flow cytometers.
• Provide guidance in flow cytometry data analysis using FlowJo and other software packages.

Duties

• Perform high-speed cell sorting on behalf of biomedical researchers using instruments such as the BD FACSAria Fusion, BD FACSymphony S6, and Sony MA900 in a Containment Level 2 laboratory.
• Support the operation and maintenance of analytical flow cytometers, including the LSRFortessa, FACSymphony A3, and FACSymphony A5 SE.
• Perform routine instrument quality control and maintenance, including daily calibration, fluidics and electronics checks
• Train graduate students, postdoctoral researchers, research technologists, and other facility users in the safe and effective operation of analytical flow cytometers.
• Provide guidance and training in flow cytometry data analysis using FlowJo and other specialized software packages.
• Provide technical support to facility users, including experimental guidance and instrument troubleshooting, while fostering effective relationships with researchers and other clients.
• Support facility operations by maintaining safe laboratory practices, evaluating new and alternative cytometry techniques, and ensuring appropriate backup and management of facility data.

Qualifications

• At minimum, a Bachelors degree in biomedical sciences or recognized equivalent required
  • Masters is preferred
• At minimum, three (3) years of experience with a variety of flow cytometry applications, preferably on newer digital analytical flow cytometers, and with flow cytometric software such as Diva and FlowJo
• Experience operating a FACSAria or other cell sorter preferred
• Ability to manage multiple priorities and a demanding schedule
• Ability to work within a busy core facility with tight deadlines
• Superior interpersonal and communication skills, both written and verbal
• Excellent analytical, troubleshooting and problem solving skills.
• Strong team player with the ability to work independently and with minimal supervision
