Job summary

The role involves interpreting blueprints, planning fabrication sequences, and collaborating with welders and fabricators to meet production timelines. Strong physical capability and trade certification are required.

Qualifications

• Minimum 5 years’ fitting experience in heavy plate/structural steel fabrication.
• Ability to read blueprints and fabrication drawings.
• Strong communication and teamwork skills.
• Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs and perform physically demanding tasks.
• Trade certification or journeyperson certification.
• Welding experience is an asset.

Responsibilities

• Read and interpret blueprints, fabrication drawings, and work orders to determine materials, dimensions, and assembly requirements for truck upfitting projects.
• Plan the sequence of fabrication tasks to ensure efficient workflow and optimal material usage.
• Lay out, measure, and mark metal components with precision for cutting/assembly.
• Cut steel, aluminum, and other metals to specifications.
• Fit and align components such as decks, subframes, brackets, crossmembers, and toolboxes.
• Weld using MIG, stick, or flux-core processes for various steel thicknesses.
• Finish welds by grinding and cleaning to meet quality standards.
• Operate hoists, cranes, forklifts safely to move heavy components.
• Maintain equipment in safe working condition; report issues.
• Collaborate with welders, fabricators, and assemblers to complete projects on schedule.
• Support continuous improvement and training of new employees.

Brandt Tractor Ltd is currently seeking a Fitter for our Saskatoon location.

The Fitter is responsible for cutting, fitting, welding, and assembling metal components for truck bodies and equipment during the upfitting process. This role ensures structural accuracy, quality workmanship, and safe completion of fabrication tasks in line with company standards.

What You Will Be Responsible For

• Read and interpret blueprints, fabrication drawings, and work orders to determine materials, dimensions, and assembly requirements for truck upfitting projects.
• Plan the sequence of fabrication tasks to ensure efficient workflow and optimal material usage.
• Lay out, measure, and mark metal components to prepare for cutting, drilling, or assembly with precision and accuracy.
• Cut steel, aluminum, and other metals using saws, torches, or plasma cutters to required specifications.
• Fit, align, and position components such as decks, subframes, brackets, crossmembers, and toolboxes to ensure proper assembly and alignment.
• Perform MIG, stick, or flux-core welding on a variety of steel thicknesses to produce strong, clean welds that meet quality standards.
• Grind, bevel, and prepare metal surfaces for welding or painting to ensure durability and finish quality.
• Assemble and weld structural frames, decks, bumpers, hitches, and custom fabrications to meet production and customer specifications.
• Repair or modify truck bodies, subframes, and components as required to maintain performance and appearance standards.
• Finish assemblies by grinding, sanding, and cleaning welds to meet company and customer quality expectations.
• Operate hoists, cranes, forklifts, and rigging equipment safely to move and position heavy components during fabrication and assembly.
• Maintain welding, cutting, and grinding equipment in safe and proper working condition to ensure consistent quality and minimize downtime.
• Document all work performed, reporting design issues, material shortages, or improvement opportunities to supervisors.
• Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work area, adhering to company safety policies and best practices.
• Work collaboratively with welders, fabricators, and assemblers to ensure projects are completed accurately and on schedule.
• Participate in continuous improvement efforts, recommending enhanced fitting, welding, or fabrication techniques to improve efficiency and product quality.
• Assist in training or mentoring new employees as required to support skill development and team performance.
• Other duties as assigned.

What We Look For

• Minimum 5 years’ fitting experience in a heavy plate/structural steel fabrication shop.
• Ability to effectively communicate in both technical and user-friendly language when appropriate, with all types of staff, including technical, professional, and upper management.
• Ability to work shift work, Willingness to work overtime or flexible hours as needed to meet production schedules.
• Ability to work independently with minimal supervision as well as part of a team.
• Possess strong communication skills, both written and oral.
• Possess strong time management skills.
• Possess flexibility to adjust to shifting priorities and deadlines.
• Welding experience considered an asset.
• Trade certification or journeyperson certification.
• Proficiency in MIG welding; knowledge of stick and flux-core welding is an asset.
• Ability to read and interpret blueprints, technical drawings, and fabrication layouts.
• Strong mechanical aptitude and problem-solving skills.
• Ability to lift to 50 lbs and perform physically demanding tasks.
