Job description

Position Summary

Under the general direction of the General Manager of Protective Services and reporting to the Fire Chief or designate, the Firefighter is responsible for the operational readiness of the apparatus and equipment during their shift at the assigned station. The role includes providing emergency response in accordance with Yellowhead County Fire Services Standards.

Position Responsibilities
Fire and Rescue
  • Perform functionality checks of all equipment used during the shift.
  • Report for duty daily in uniform and be punctual for all shifts.
  • Operate as a member of the firefighting crew.
  • Responsible for cleaning and basic maintenance of apparatus, equipment, and facilities as directed.
  • Participate in fire and rescue equipment training for operational readiness.
  • Follow instructions from the assigned firefighting officer.
  • Respond to emergency call-backs as requested.
Emergency Response
  • Maintain knowledge of firefighting techniques, equipment, and emergency medical services.
  • Maintain a healthy lifestyle and fitness level.
  • Respond to emergencies within Yellowhead County, assisting fire districts, industry, or other agencies as needed.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications, Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
Education/Skills
  • Grade 12 education or equivalent.
  • NFPA Standard 1001 - Firefighter or equivalent.
  • Standard First Aid Level C and CPR certification.
  • Valid Class 3 Driver's License with air endorsement.
  • Effective communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Strong computer skills, especially in Microsoft Office.
  • Minimum of two years emergency service experience.
  • Defensive driving skills.
Attributes
  • Strong organizational and supervisory skills.
Working Environment
Additional Education/Skills
  • Post-secondary diploma or degree.
  • NFPA Standard 1002 - Operator certification.
  • Five or more years of emergency service experience.
Work Conditions
  • Work primarily at the station.
  • Respond to emergencies across the region under all weather and environmental conditions.
  • Operate in high-stress, hazardous environments requiring immediate action.
  • Perform physically demanding tasks.
  • Travel throughout the region, including in emergency response mode.
  • Attend evening and weekend meetings and training sessions as needed.

The salary range is $66,681 to $82,685 per year. Yellowhead County offers a competitive benefits package. Postings are available in the Evansburg and Edson firehalls.
