Job description

Position Overview

The Firefighter, under the general direction of the General Manager of Protective Services and reporting to the Fire Chief or designate, is responsible for ensuring the operational readiness of apparatus and equipment during their shift at their assigned station. The role includes providing emergency response in accordance with Yellowhead County Fire Services Standards.

Position Responsibilities

• Perform functionality checks of all equipment used during the shift.
• Report for duty on time, in uniform, every day.
• Operate as a member of the firefighting crew.
• Maintain and clean apparatus, equipment, and facilities as directed.
• Participate in training for fire and rescue equipment.
• Follow instructions from the firefighting crew officer.
• Respond to emergency call-backs as needed.

Emergency Response Duties

• Maintain knowledge of firefighting techniques, equipment, and emergency medical services.
• Maintain good physical health and fitness.
• Respond to emergencies within Yellowhead County to assist fire districts, industry, or other agencies.
• Perform other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications, Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

Education & Skills

• Grade 12 education or equivalent.
• NFPA Standard 1001 - Firefighter or equivalent.
• Standard First Aid Level C and CPR certification.
• Valid Class 3 Driver's License with air endorsement.
• Effective communication skills, both written and verbal.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office.
• At least two years of emergency service experience.
• Defensive driving skills.

Attributes

• Strong organizational and supervisory skills.

Additional Qualifications

• Post-secondary diploma or degree (preferred).
• NFPA Standard 1002 - Operator certification.
• Five years of emergency service experience (preferred).

Working Environment

• Work primarily at the station, with response duties throughout the County.
• Respond to emergencies under various weather and environmental conditions, including extended hours.
• Operate in a high-stress, hazardous environment requiring immediate action.
• Physical effort is required for emergency response and training.
• Travel within the region, including in emergency response mode, may be necessary.
• Attendance at evening and weekend meetings and training sessions may be required.

The salary range for this position is $66,681 to $82,685 per year. Yellowhead County offers a competitive benefits package. Postings are available in the Evansburg and Edson firehalls.
