Job summary

LRI Engineering Inc. in downtown Toronto is seeking a Systems Engineer to lead fire protection design and project management across diverse facilities. You will apply Canadian Building and Fire Codes, CAN/ULC, NFPA standards, and provide expert analysis from design through commissioning.

Ideal candidates have 5+ years in fire protection systems engineering, with a P.Eng. title preferred and HydraCAD proficiency.

• HydraCAD expertise required.
• Strong understanding of fire protection design principles.

Responsibilities

• Design, review, and manage fire protection projects including site reviews and compliance with Building/Fire Codes (Ontario/Canada) and NFPA standards.
• Lead system installations coordinating with contractors and cross-functional teams; participate in construction and pre-construction site meetings.
• Interpret Ontario Building Code, Ontario Fire Code, and NFPA/ULC standards for clients and internal teams.
• Drive compliance resolution and liaise with Authorities Having Jurisdiction.
• Provide hydraulics calculations, pipe sizing, drawings, specifications, and cost-estimate reports; develop Alternative Solutions.
• Evaluate sprinkler/standpipe/fire pump and special suppression systems and select cost-effective replacements.
• Advise clients on Codes and standards; support project billing and financial aspects.
• Conduct site visits, review conditions, shop drawings, tests, commissioning; communicate findings.
• Represent LRI on technical committees at provincial and national levels.

POSITION OVERVIEW

Working with internal and external stakeholders, this position provides engineering services backed by expertise in relevant Fire and Building Codes.

JOB FUNCTIONS

Undertake design, design review, and managing projects including site reviews and assessing the fire protection systems in a building and apply Canadian provincial and national Building and Fire Codes, CAN/ULC, NFPA standards, and best practice guidelines related to Fire Protection Systems.

Project manage system installations in close coordination with contractors and other cross-functional teams. Attend construction and pre-construction site meetings.

Apply and provide interpretations of the Ontario Building Code, Ontario Fire Code, and ULC/NFPA standards to internal and external client.

Take leadership in resolving compliance matters and attending meetings with stakeholders and with Authorities Having Jurisdiction.

Provide hydraulic calculations, pipe sizing, drawings, and specifications. Develop Alternative Solutions and prepare project reports with cost estimates.

Assess performance of existing sprinkler, standpipe, fire water pumps, and special suppression systems (e.g., low/high expansion foam systems, chemical powder, and clean agent fire suppression systems), selecting proper and cost-effective solutions for replacement using applicable Codes and standards.

Support internal and external clients by advising on application of Codes and standards.

Conduct site visits to gather data on existing conditions and review construction, review shop drawings, attend tests, and commissioning of the systems.

Assist Finance team with project billing.

Represent LRI on various technical committees, both provincial and national as may be required.

QUALIFICATIONS

• University degree in Mechanical Engineering. P. Eng. title is a must.


• Minimum 5 years of experience in a Fire Protection Systems engineering and project management with expertise in sprinklers and pump systems. Candidates with more experience will be considered for senior level positions.


• Exceptional skills in HydraCAD.


• Experience working on medium to large scale projects including high-rise mix use, commercial, infrastructure, multiple towers, and healthcare buildings.


• Excellent knowledge of OBC, OFC, and NFPA standards.


• Experience with site project management, payment certification, preparation of site review notes, contract change notice/orders, site instructions, and CCDC contract documents.


• Excellent communication, report writing, presentation, stakeholder management, analytical, planning, and organizational skills.


• Ability to work well independently and to interact with other industry professionals, associated trades, and industry authorities.


• Versatile and able to manage varying workloads and competing priorities.


• Ability to establish positive relationships with project team members and clients.
