Job summary

Johnson Controls Canada is seeking a Fire Alarm Technician to perform assisted installation, commissioning, and verification on fire alarm equipment, including device connections and circuits. You will read blueprints and specifications, prepare verification reports for customers, conduct system acceptance tests with AHJs, and produce as-built drawings on project completion.

Travel within British Columbia and the Yukon may be required.

Qualifications

  • College diploma in Fire Protection or related electrical field.
  • Ability to travel for out-of-town projects within BC and Yukon.
  • Experience reading blueprints, submittals, and manuals.
  • Strong communication and report writing skills.
  • Able to lift 50–70 lbs and perform physical labor.
  • Valid Class 5 driver’s licence is required.

Responsibilities

  • Install, commission, and verify fire alarm equipment; connect devices and circuits.
  • Read and interpret blueprints, diagrams, schematics, submittals, and specs.
  • Prepare verification reports for customers and conduct system tests with AHJs.
  • Create as-built drawings on project completion.
  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of product lines.
  • Travel within the District as needed.
  • Perform small programming modifications under supervision.
  • Follow OSHA and SimplexGrinnell safety policies.

What you will do

  • Perform assisted installation, commissioning, and verification activities on Fire Alarm related equipment, including connection of devices and circuits.
  • Read and interpret blueprints, diagrams, schematics, submittals, and specifications.
  • Complete verification reports for submittal to customers and carry out system acceptance tests with AHJ’s and other interested parties.
  • Complete As Built drawings on the completion of the job.
  • Maintain up to date knowledge of various product lines.
  • Identify general deficiencies and code issues in the field during verification.
  • Travel throughout the District business area when required.
  • Conduct small programming modifications to an existing system with supervision.
  • Program small systems (upon training).
  • Adhere to all OSHA and SimplexGrinnell safety policies and procedures.

What we look for

Required

Completion of a college diploma in Fire Protection, an Electrical/Electronics Technician program, an Electrical Apprenticeship, a related field, or equivalent work experience. Candidates currently pursuing these qualifications are also encouraged to apply.

  • This role may require travel for out-of-town projects, primarily within British Columbia and the Yukon. The ideal candidate must be willing and able to travel as needed.
  • Experience in reading and interpreting blueprints, submittals, and operational/product manuals.
  • Possess strong communication and report/document writing skills
  • Experience with hand tools test equipment, multi-meter usage, digital analyzer and commissioning devices.
  • Capable of performing physical labor to include carrying and moving equipment and tools up to 50-70 lbs.
  • Able to work in unusual and sometimes difficult positions such as climbing ladders, scaffolding and high lift equipment up to 40 feet, working within ducts, crawl spaces, above ceilings, etc.
  • Ability to work flexible hours including weekends to meet customer requirements.
  • Demonstrate a high level of customer service.
  • Ability to work well with team members.
  • Ability to adhere to, implement, and follow safety guidelines and procedures at all times.
  • Strong organizational skills, a positive attitude, and an ability to learn quickly.
  • Possess a valid Class 5 driver’s license and driving record that meets company requirements.
  • Able to pass a pre-employment background check.

Preferred

  • CFAA or ASTTBC certification.
